With only a few remaining acts to be confirmed for 2010’s Deer Park Stage line-up at The Big Chill festival, sounds from far afield are set to ring out from Eastnor Castle Deer Park this weekend. Saturday will see an authentic set of Jamaican mento music from The Jolly Boys, an act whose origins date back to the 1940s, Chillers should keep an ear open for their take on the new-soul classical “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. Also joining Saturday’s bill are Monarchy, an electro pop duo making waves in the run up to their debut release drawing comparisons from as broad a spectrum as Scissor Sisters and Daft Punk. Continuing our musical safari will be Phil Vassar, an authentic Country musician from Virginia USA who in his time has racked up an impressive 19 entries to the Billboard Country music chart.
Starting proceedings on Saturday and Sunday respectively for The Revellers' Stage will be a DJ set from Sanjay Tailor, Asian Dub Foundation’s live programmer/DJ and one from Bristolian indie pop two piece Malachai.
Opening proceedings over on the Clash Stage on Saturday, replacing injured Ganglians, will be MidiMidis who soundtrack their lives entirely from midi and 8-bit melodies, and on Sunday Les Clochards open the stage with a pan-Atlantic blend of French chanson and American soul sounds. If you're in search of some mind food, you'll be spoilt for choice in 2010 with a feast of spoken word at the Words in Motion tent. On Friday presenters from MyChoons follow on from their sell out run at London’s Roundhouse with the musical musings
of a very special guest soon to be revealed. Culinary wizards Bompas and Parr present Scratch n’ Sniff revealing some of the secrets behind their exciting installation the Ziggurat of Flavour. Saturday welcomes Kenyan Orphan Project trustee Daniel Magnus bringing an insight into the charity’s vital work fighting disease, poverty and injustice to improve the lives of Kenyan children. Those brave enough for some late night horror and ghost stories are in for a ghoulish treat as story teller Chris Lowe relays tales from the modern to the ancient about madmen, murders and monsters.
For those looking for a late night dance floor affair, new additions to the Paradiso stage line up include How’s My Raving? VIP Crew, experts in the pop-up club field, bringing with them a bass heavy record box for the early bird partiers on Thursday. DJ duo Bam Bam Sound spinning reggae Junglist B-Boy tracks spliced with punk rave tunes, Western Soul, Suisse Tony and Sparky will also be on hand for those eager to get the party started a day early, while We Don’t Play man the decks Sunday night for Chillers with true dance floor endurance skills. In the daylight hours Paradiso also welcomes DJ Bart-X and the Red Dwarf legend and BBC 6Music presenter Craig Charles’ Funk & Soul Show. Craig will also will also present his BBC 6Music 'Funk and Soul Show' live from the festival site, interviewing some of the stars from the funk and soul community appearing at the festival, including Wax Tailor, Dam Funk, Roots Manuva, Bellaruche, Paul Jonas from Tru Thoughts records, The Fantasy Funk Band featuring James Taylor, Mr Scruff and Mavis (Ashley Beadle and Darren Morris).
These days no festival is complete without the ultimate in late night discos and The Big Chill will be no exception. If Chillers think they can go until 5am then they can head to the Starburst stage where each evening the Ssshhh! Headphone Party will be on hand to entertain.
In addition to his post-headliner DJ set, dub master Adrian Sherwood will be on hand for the early bird partiers on Thursday’s Lazyland line up. Sherwood joins Brighton’s funk pop outfit Lack of Afro, experimental acapella act Hyperpotamus and Bristol Hi-Fi’s very own Mr Benn. Infamous London busker Lewis Floyd Henry moves from his usual spots of London's Brick Lane and Tottenham Court Road for a somewhat greener affair on Thursday at The Big Chill. As the weekend truly kicks in, Lazyland will be treated to Rui Boomclick’s set of dub drenched lounge. Being one of the few DJs to enjoy success across the world and dance genres, Pathaan’s ‘stoned Asia music’ is yet another of the eclectic sets Lazyland will enjoy on Saturday. Also added to Saturday's Lazyland line-up is Luke Soloman, the founder of seminal British house label, Classic Recordings. On Sunday the Noize of Art founder and NME Radio DJ Ben Osborne brings his cutting edge electronica to the decks, proceeded by Mark Morriss.
A special new rum-soaked stage is set for The Big Chill in 2010, Sailor Jerry’s Ink City will be setting up shop and serving cocktails to the sounds of live music and DJ sets from Kids In Glass Houses, Didz Hammond, Primary 1 and Moshi Moshi DJs, plus many more...

The Cinema Tent
Manning the projector for The Cinema Tent on Friday will be the team from the BFI, who'll be bringing with them, amongst many other gems, reels including a father/son combo of ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ staring David Bowie and Moon, the sci-fi thriller directed by Bowie’s son Duncan Jones. On Saturday night, Warp Films and Optimum Realisings will present an array including Garth Jennings’ Brit-Comedy smash ‘Son Of Rambow’, indie-flick ‘Eagle Vs Shark’ starring Flight Of The Concords’ Jemaine Clement and Guillermo del Toro’s haunting fantasy horror ‘The Devil’s Backbone’. The Cinema Tent also offers the chance to get up close and personal with the faces from the screen and behind the scenes. Following the success of the critically acclaimed adaptation of ‘An Education’ from Lynn Barber’s memoirs, the Observer writer will follow the screening of her real-life tale with a Q&A session. On the more surreal end of the spectrum Kayvan Novak,
the masked star of controversial BAFTA winning comedy series ‘Fonejacker’ precedes a screening of two choice episodes by facing questions from you. Through interviewing the investigators and whistle blowers emerging from the clear up of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, voice of The Simpsons, Harry Shearer uncovers some shocking claims and will be on hand following a screening of his documentary, ‘The Big Uneasy’. Presenting another successful novel adaptation which has garnered many film festival honours, author Rupert Isaacson joins the Cinema Tent. ‘Horse Boy’ follows a young boy as his family negotiate the wild landscape of Mongolia whilst he deals with his own journey through autism.
The Dereliction Drive-In
Last year saw the arrival of one of your favourite areas to the festival, the Dereliction Drive-In, brought to you by Kate Carlton-Reddit and Peter Carlton. This year, they’ve passed the baton over to BCHQ and we’re really proud to have the harnessed the creative talents of Stuart Free, Murray Clark, and Kirsty Griffin. Along with programmer Victoria Burns, Stuart, Tim and the team at the BFI, Peter Carlton at Warp Films and Chris and Kate at Popcorn Corner Cinema, they’ve let their imaginations run wild and have spent months working hard to take the Dereliction Drive-In to a whole new level for 2010...
On Friday, The BFI will be taking over the Dereliction Drive-In with a series of experimental, live audio-visual performances taken from their live project 'Dark Fibre', that will truly push you to the edge of your imagination.
