How to get to Naxos and back… this might look complicated, but believe us, it’s really not that difficult if you follow the detailed advice offered below:
LONDON TO ATHENS
From the UK there are four main airlines that fly to Athens:
British Airways
www.britishairways.com
0845 773 3377
Easyjet
www.easyJet.com
0870 600 0000
Olympic Airways
www.olympic-airways.gr
0870 606 0460
Cronus
www.cronus.gr
Flights to Athens should be booked to leave the UK on the evening of the 21st September to arrive on the 22nd to catch early morning ferries (most leave around 08:00 from Piraeus – see below). Early flight booking is strongly advised for the best prices!!
HOW TO GET FROM ATHENS TO NAXOS
By Air
Athens to Naxos is possible by air though flights are limited.
Bookings: Olympic Airlines 0870 6060460
By Boat
The easiest option is the high speed boat from Piraeus to Naxos. The newer, comfortable high speed craft (where you are not allowed on deck) can be taken from the main port – Piraeus. Allow at least an hour by cab to get here from the airport – especially at rush hour – and around £15 cab fare. Alternatively, take the E96 express bus service from just outside arrivals. A 24-hr service. The E95 goes to Syntagma Square in central Athens which again links you to the metro for Piraeus if you prefer that. (This option is probably better to use on the way home for any chillers spending the day in downtown Athens). Tickets E2.93 / ticket valid 24hrs usually
Alternatively you may have the option of leaving from Rafina port (this is closer to the new International ‘El Venizelos’ Airport where virtually all flights now go to), though in late season the timetable is inconsistent and unreliable, to say the least. Rafina is approx 30 mins by cab for around £10. 08:00 is the usual departure time from both ports which connects well with most night flights from the UK. (See below for information on prices.) We would recommend Piraeus as there is a much wider range of boats and times available there.
The high speed ferry takes around 3 and a half hours and cost should be in the region £17 economy class, £22 first class and £30 VIP class. We’ll get some quotes in Euros closer to the date!
Alternatively, you can take a slow ferry (from Piraeus only). An average slow crossing from Piraeus to Naxos is around 6 hours, but – as many Big Chillers have pointed out – it may be preferable if you fancy lying out on deck, invariably in warm sunshine, watching the islands drift past. Most ferries stop either just at Paros – or Syros and Paros – en route. Stops tend to be for around 15 minutes. To travel on a ferry deckspace class it would cost about £6 or to have a seat inside it would be around £7 per person.
If you wish to check any of the boat times, call Piraeus Port Authority: 003 010 4511311 / 003 010 4226000, but bear in mind that timetables seem to change suddenly and without warning, though you should always be able to get a boat from Piraeus at 08.00 and later in the day too.
Tickets are bought at the port on the day of departure – absolutely no need to book in advance. Helpful taxi drivers will advise which ticket shops to go to, but generally prices vary very little.

COMING HOME
For the return journey, please note that on the 2nd of October rooms will need to be vacated at 12 midday. Guests leaving the island that day can thus get ferries to catch flights back home on the 3rd.
It should be clear that to leave the island and catch a flight on the same day is probably not possible as ferry timetables tend to be unreliable at this later time of year.
There can be delays on the return journey and don’t count on there being a fast ferry at all – last year on the day we travelled only the slow ferry was running, though some fast ferries run all through winter. Advice is to sleep on the deck :
a) it’s cheaper
b) it’s not that cold & you get a nice breeze
c) it’s pretty comfy on a lilo
d) some people that had booked for inside said that it was very stuffy in there, you couldn’t actually lie down, the seats were fairly uncomfortable to sleep in and the lights were on all night.
The popular vote goes for the lilo on the deck, long trousers and a jumper, maybe a sarong or towel for cover, you’ll be fine. There are also benches you can sleep on outside.
The overnight boats arrive in Athens in the morning, but some flights don't go out until the evening (the early morning Easyjet flight is an option but the timing of the night boats generally don't give enough time for transfer) Contrary to the idea that Athens is just polluted, ugly and uncomfortable, there are some lovely views and tavernas in the old town, and at that time of year it’s not *that* hot so the smog’s not too bad. It may be possible to take a nap in the afternoon on the benches in the botanical then head out to the airport in good time. Pleasant day all round, really, and there are likely to be loads of chillers doing the same that you can hook up with for sight-seeing or that you’ll inevitably bump into round the old town! For chillers who have to / opt to spend a day in Athens but don't want to be downtown, they can get the E96, stop off at the beach for the day (on South coast – its the area where we looked at venues – loads of beaches) then get back on E96 later for airport. Beach to airport is only around half an hour (although allow longer in rush hour).
We will be providing further information and updates concerning travelling arrangements on bigchill.net as these become available.
