Nylon Rhythm Machine: Pantheon EP (Catskills)
“I wanted to make music for people to chill to on hot summer evenings, while sipping sangria and winking at the ladies,” says Mr Tim Gomershall aka Nylon Rhythm Machine, laying down his mission statement as the latest in a line of quality artists to emerge from the rapidly growing Catskills roster out of Brighton.
Here’s a label that knows that there’s more to life than booming bass and big breakdowns, and in many ways this EP qualifies as the ultimate Big Chill sound – luscious strummed and picked Spanish guitar over some crisp and funky rolling rhythms, strings and subtle synths adding colour, melody and harmony and some crafty scratching delivering the edge. This is music to calm the spirit and soothe the soul, whilst retaining a sharp and lively approach to contemporary music. A breathe of fresh air and a perfect soundtrack for summer too.
Its folk roots are evident from the beginning on the wide-screen vistas of ‘One Rubber’ and the classically trained ‘Jupiter’ on side A. The flip side pushes things further out, ‘All I Had’ moves at a faster pace and heads eastwards with a more jazzual edge, and ‘Vanilla’ rounds off the four-tracker with a more filmic approach, using strings and a tinkling circular piano riff that has ‘theme tune’ stamped all over it.
