22:00 – 23:00 Rob Deering

At last year’s Edinburgh Festival Rob hosted the prestigious ‘Comedy Zone’, and has recently supported Emo Philips and Frank Skinner. He has a big face.

23:00 – 01:30 Sundaze
The live Sundaze AV band – DJ Unity Dub, Resolution, Anne Garner & VJ Fugue – will perform ‘Moving Spaces’, mixing classic sci-fi movie scenes, sampled dialogue, live electronica, flute & vocals, and DJ cuts. Followed by a showcase of Elektrolux Records’ ‘Space Nights’ film.

SATURDAY

13:00 – 15:00 Index on Censorship debate: Protest and Survive
Amidst the post September 11 anti-terrorist legislation is there any future for the anti-globalisation movement? Speakers include Mike Slocombe (editor urban75.com), Guy Taylor (Globalise Resistance) and Humfrey Hunter (journalist).

15:00 – 16:00 Courttia Newland: talk
Courttia’s second novel ‘Snakeskin’ was published by Little Brown in April this year, and like his first novel ‘The Scholar’, it has received critical acclaim. This rap / hip hop artist turned author is the only non-sportsperson or musician to be sponsored by Nike and he has things to say.

16:00 – 21:00 Open Dex hosted by the Stick it On Crew
Five hours of DJ Democracy where 14 non-DJ Superstars will be given a chance to share their favourite tunes with The Big Chill. The afternoon promises a boundary-crossing, table-turning, freestyle musical mash-up with the focus on a good time vibe. The results of previous Open Dex have been spectacular, so come shake what your Mama gave ya and enjoy the party.

21:00 – 22:00 Earl Zinger
Former Galliano frontman Rob Gallagher, Master of Disguise and the missing link between Pete Tosh, Gil Scott-Heron and Shuggie Otis, performs the funniest and the funkiest cuts from his recent album ‘Put Your Phazers on Stun and Throw Your Health Food Skyward’.

22:00 – 23:00 John Hegley
Bring it on. John Hegley is widely recognised as one of the country’s most innovative, irreverent and sharp-witted comics, poets and dog-lovers. He now has seven bestselling volumes of verse and is a regular sell-out at The Edinburgh Festival.

23:00 – 00:00 Tina C
Tina C is a country music singer from Nashville. Kind of. ‘She’ (ahem) mixes a great blend of comedy, original songs and a forceful personality, with a host of hit albums including ‘No Dick’s As Hard As My Life’ and ‘Complete and Utter Country’. ‘A major talent.’ The Independent

00:00 – 01:30 Mash up of Ninja Tune videos

Quiz the brains behind The Big Chill.

14:30 – 16:30 Index on Censorship debate: The Sex Industry

16:30 – 17:30 John Dowie
Very special tales penned and performed magically by an equally special poet. For both little and Big Chilldren.

17:30 – 19:30 Film: ‘Barbarella’

20:00 – 22:00 Laptop Jamming
Bring your laptop and join these audiovisual culture jammers. No worries if you don’t have one; it’s just as fun to watch this madness as it is to take part.

22:00 – 23:00 John Dowie & Neil Innes: ‘Ego Warriors’
Are you sick to death of being herded en masse into assorted compartments of the Consumer Society and robbed of your self-esteem? Worry not: former comedian Dowie and former Python-man Innes are here to teach you how to become an Ego Warrior. Lie down and be counted!

23:00 – 00:00 Big Chill Films
Some of our finest moments from 2001.

00:30 – 01:30 Simon Munnery: League Against Tedium
Dis Am Unbertechnokomedia
The League Against Tedium is ‘a wilfully self-deluded masterpiece of comic invention’ (The Scotsman), an omniscient comic creation of megalomaniac proportions. With the aid of the computer-operated gadgets, The League Against Tedium imposes his wonderful and frightening worldview on an unknowing audience. A big hit in the MediaMix last year.

01:30 – 03:00 The Milky Bar Kid & guests
A verbal mash-up and herbal comedown featuring guest performers synthesizing visuals, sounds, words and movement into a righteous ritual to close the festival.

Enchanted Garden 2002

Enchanted Garden 2002Enchanted Garden FAQs

Q : Until what time does the entertainment go on?

A : The main stages are open until 1am on Friday and Saturday, and until 11pm on Sunday, with the MediaMix tent and the Arts Trail going till 3am and 2.30am respectively. The 24-hour café will be open 24 hours (surprise surprise) with Big Chill FM being piped through for insomniacs (don’t forget to bring your radio!).

Q: Why does the fun have to stop then?

A: If we were to apply to go later, we’d be seen very much as a ‘dance event’ (which we are not) and subject to a whole different and more rigorous set of license conditions from the local authority. We would also find things much harder with the local community, who are already very tolerant as it is.

Q : What is the nearest main line railway station and what would it cost from London?

A : Salisbury is well-connected from most parts of the UK. The rail return ticket from Waterloo > Salisbury is £28.70. Trains are regular and run at approximately half hourly intervals. The ticket to get is called a ‘Network away break’ and works for up to 5 days as long as you travel after 9.30am. All National Rail Enquiries 0845 748 4950.

Q : Is there a bus from London?

A : No, but there will be a regular shuttle from Salisbury station, leaving approximately once an hour, timed to co-incide with London trains. The shuttle will operate all day Friday and Saturday morning, returning Sunday afternoon/evening and Monday morning. Cost will be £4 per person each way.

Q : What time can I get on site?

A : It opens 10.30am Friday. Please do not turn up before then as we cannot let you on site. If you are travelling down the night before, please do not pitch your tent nearby on private land without permission – this is likely to jeopardise our relationship with neighbours and possibly the future of our event. For those travelling long distances who may be looking for caming in the area on Thursday night, the nearest campsite is Church Farm (01725 552563 / 552237) at Sixpenny Handley, a few miles east of Larmer Tree on the B3081. Look for the site behind the church: it has room for around 150-200 pitches and is quite cheap. Alternatively, if coming from the north west, or via Shaftesbury, you may want to try Blackmore Vale at Sherborn Causeway, west of Shaftesbury (01747 852573).

Q : How much do cabs cost from Salisbury station?

A : Around £25

Q : Are dogs allowed?

A : No animals on site. There are peacocks and macaws in the Larmer Tree Gardens, and thus all pets are banned from the entire site.

Q : Can we bring a live-in vehicle?

A : Yes, at a surcharge of £10 – but you must have booked this in advance.

Q : Is there wheelchair access?

A : Yes. we have disabled toilets and showers too. Anyone with disabilities needing assistance with their luggage, getting to the showers etc should ask a steward for help at any time.

Q : Can I camp next to my vehicle?

A : Given the peaceful surroundings, it would be a shame to have cars coming into the camping fields. However, aesthetics aside, we have to keep cars and tents separate for Health and Safety reasons. The car park will be immediately next to the main road on the right as you turn up the drive, leaving only a short walk with tent and gear.

Q : Will there be food for vegans and vegetarians?

A : Yes, there will be a good range of stalls selling quality snacks and meals. Vegans and vegetarians will be amply catered for.

Q : Can we bring food into the camping areas?

A: It’s okay to bring food into the camping areas as long as it isn’t in glass bottles or containers and doesn’t require an open fire on which to cook it (standard camping stoves are OK). Glass and fires are not allowed anywhere on site. This is to protect you, the surroundings and the animals that live here. There are peacocks, macaws and other wildlife sharing this site with us. We’re just here for the weekend – please don’t spoil it for them.

Q : What time can we buy alcohol?

A : The bars will be open until midnight on Friday and Saturday and according to normal licensing hours on Sunday. There will be two bars plus the Cocktail Bar in the gardens. If you require ‘take-outs’ the bars have containers, but can only serve during licensing hours. All pints £2.50 (Stella, San Miguel, Strongbow, Guinness), Spirits £2.50, plus champagne cocktails £4, softs £1, plus bars that will stock cans only. Alcohol may not be brought into the grounds. It’s okay, however, on the camping area, as long as it is not in glass bottles.

Q : Will Big Chill FM be broadcasting again?

A : Yes – this year on 87.7fM – so bring a radio for night-time usage and tune in close to the site as you approach for travel updates.

Q : What is there for children to do?

A : The Children’s Tent with all manner of entertainment for your little bundles of joy will be open between the hours of 4pm to 8pm on Friday, and 10am to 8pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. There is also an unsupervised children’s playing area on the left as you enter the gardens. Please note however that we cannot take responsibility for children so they should be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Q : Hot showers again?

A : You bet!

Q : What time does it all finish and what time do we have to leave site?

A : 11pm main stages Sunday with the cinema going through till 3am. Everybody must be off site by Monday lunchtime. Sad but true.

Q : Is it okay if I tape the music?

A : There is no unauthorised recording or filming allowed in the festival grounds unless you have a specific pass. All recordings remain the copyright of The Big Chill unless otherwise authorised.

Enchanted Garden 2002

Enchanted Garden 2002NITIN SAWHNEY

Situated somewhere between classicism and pop, East and West, club and concert hall, Nitin Sawhney has carved out a singular niche in British culture. An actor and activist as well as musician and teacher, his recent work has shown a range and ambition – taking him literally around the world – that few can match. A strong believer that ‘emotion is the glue between different forms of music’, expect to hear one of this year’s most diverse sets from this multi-talented man.

NORMAN JAY

Was it only two years ago that Norman Jay – now justly honoured with an MBE – played his first Big Chill? In that short space of time, his Sunday sets have taken on an almost talismanic status, and not solely for their ability to bring the sunshine out in all of us. If today’s DJs now enjoy unprecedented freedom to mix and match genres and styles, then all due credit must go to Norman for being one of the original ground-breakers. A style setter, peerless party promoter and living legend all rolled into one. A knighthood surely awaits him one day.

ORCHESTRAL WORLD GROOVE

The joint creation of DJ Pathaan (see below) and music producer Gaudi, Orchestral World Groove is a project that aims to turn on the world to a new concept of world music. Recently signed to the rapidly growing Music For Dreams label, this dynamic duo have already been wowing audiences all over the world as well as delivering quality remixes for the likes of Dusted, Doof, and The Dum Dum Project. Orchestral World Groove do exactly what it says on the tin.

THE ORCHESTRA
with Neotropic, Spacer and The Runaways

Kicking off their UK tour here at The Big Chill, The Orchestra are at the forefront of the new generation of artists forging a new audience for classical music. Equally at home in club or concert hall, the sweeping textures of The Orchestra blend dynamically with the beats and samples of electronic artists Spacer and Neotropic as well as the hip-hop grooves of the Runaways. A window onto the music of the future.

OSYMYSO

Two years ago, Osymyso burst into prominence as the wag who managed to turn the Peggy Mitchell vs Pat Butcher prize fight into the Pat ‘n’ Peg dance anthem. Undoubtedly one of the most prolific and talented ‘bootleggers’ around, Osymyso is currently enjoying himself more than ever, as his recent EP which splices together 101 famous intros amply attests. Given that his art form may still be only in its infancy, his is most certainly a name to watch.

PAPERJON

After trawling through The Big Chill’s online forum at the end of last year, paperjon noticed that a number of Bristolians were in the mood for a new night. Thus was Catch A Chill born, now successfully ensconced at the Quaybar and helping to keep Sundays by the water as relaxed as they should be. There, jon plays his trademark ‘wonky house’. He claims to be scared of large tents, but judging by his performance at our Open Dex session in Bristol last year, he will be entirely at home in our Club tent this weekend.

PATHAAN

One of originators of the Brixton scene that has continued to flourish ever since, Pathaan is the man behind Stoned Asia. Rapidly outgrowing its orginal home at the Dogstar, Stoned Asia has taken Pathaan to residencies in Italy, NYC, Barcelona and Ibiza, as well as spawning five compilations to date. The most recent of these is ‘Pathaan’s Small World’, and that’s what he carries in his record bag: truly global music that will take you on a visionary journey into our shared future.

PESHAY

This man’s contribution to the history of dance music is well known, continually taking drum and bass into new and exciting territory. Certainly ‘Miles From Home’, his most recent LP, was acclaimed for its imaginative use of jazz – although Peshay is already moving on, now working increasingly with elements of house and disco to achieve ever fresher takes on his distinctive sound. One thing is sure: the man is a natural born talent.

PHIL MISON

One of the original pioneers of the Café del Mar sound with his ground-breaking sets in Ibiza, Phil Mison has been involved in the chill-out scene longer than most. Having recently steered the fifth installment of ‘Real Ibiza’ through to completion, he is now trying to do the same for his own album. In the meantime, we are pleased to welcome him to his first Enchanted Garden as a performing artist.

PITCH BLACK

With fifteen years each of audio and visual experimentation under their belts – six of them as Pitch Black – Paddy Free and Michael Hodgson can justly claim to be founding members of New Zealand’s burgeoning music scene. With their custom-made Mideo sampler that triggers real-time video from a synthesizer keyboard, they are here to fill your senses with their unique combination of sonic and visual manipulation.

POLE

Stefan Betke, originally from Düsseldorf, but now a Berliner by choice, is one of the growing band of artists who are bringing electronica and the classical canon into something like alignment. Counting Steve Reich and Arnold Schoenberg, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay and Fred Frith amongst his greatest influences, Betke has nonetheless also earned a reputation for literally making the earth move at his rare live appearances. As much a devoted minimalist as a dub and bass man, he is sure to twist your ears in unexpected directions.

QUANTIC
feat. Alice Russell & EQ

Hailing from Bewdley in the West Midlands, 22-year-old Will Holland has already proved himself to be little short of a programming and musical genius. As deft with a guitar, bass or drum as a sampler – ‘there’s no point sampling something if you can do it yourself’ he says – Quantic is the kind of wayward talent we love so much. With the addition here of vocalist Alice Russell and EQ, he will undoubtedly knock our socks off if his new album ‘Apricot Morning’ is anything to go by.

ROB LUIS

Back in ’92, all of Brighton’s clubs seemed to be house-oriented, so Rob Luis decided to take matters into his own hands. One decade on, with nights such as Shake Yer Wig!, Vibes Express and the monthly Etch with Mr Scruff under his belt, it’s an entirely different story. As the powerhouse behind the Tru Thoughts label – and compiler of the recent phonic:hoop compilation in tribute to his club night of the same name – Rob champions music that is fresh, unexpected and downright funky.

ROB WOOD

Having recently completed his stewardship of Jockey Slut (which saw said magazine become one of this country’s finest sources of musical inspiration), Rob is now free to indulge his love of quality tuneage to the hilt. Which is precisely what he intends to do here this weekend: expect a wide and discerning selection of beats, breaks and blasts from the past.

ROTOR+

If this year’s Enchanted Garden is graced with more Antipodean guests than ever before, that’s a testament to the strength of the chill-out scene down under. New Zealand has long enjoyed the leftfield electronica of Aucklander Rotor+ and now, it seems, the rest of the world is only just catching up thanks to his ‘Aileron’ LP. As a man with as much interest in silence as sonic adventures, let Rotor+ introduce you to his unique world.

SASHA CRNOBRNJA & NICK NAME

Since 1993, Swiss-born Sasha Crnobrnja has been working away helping to make New York a sonically bearable place. With his full schedule of weekly parties with the Organic Grooves Collective, the Codek label he runs with Alex Gloor, and his own solo project, we’re privileged that the man with the unpronounceable surname has accepted our invitation to play in the gardens. He is joined by London based DJ Nick Name from the Care In The Community collective.

SEEN
feat. Joe90, Mr Craig & MC Ekimov

After rocking the poolside parties in Naxos, The Winter Festival at Ocean, and the hallowed environs of The Love-In, Mr Craig & Joe90 return to The Enchanted Garden for their second year running – with the added ingredient of MC Ekimov’s ‘mic love’. Now running their own monthly ‘Seen’ night in Bristol, already described as ‘a watchtower for the future’ by Venue magazine, Mr Craig & Joe90 are here to give you a large dose of their future boogie.

SH*T BOB

Descended from mayhem, frenetic dancing and chillies, Sh*t Bob was delivered by the midwife Monk-De-Wally-de-Honk in an Enchanted Garden one hazy summer’s afternoon in 2001. He was left to mature on a diet of soul, funk, disco and any other musical toxins he could get his hands on. Soon roofs were torn off house parties, rabbits’ ears were blown off as The Armitage Shankz Sound System came into force. Then came SoxaN and the rest is either history… or piss artistry.

SIMON STRICK

Six years of meandering around various types of dance music has finally led Simon to the housey funky breaks that have become his trademark style. Having DJed in various locations around the inside of his flat – including the bathroom, his highest profile gig to date – he recently released his first EP of queasy listening, made with Barry Hollloway under the name of ‘Metrolounge’. He lives in South London without his wife or children, as he has neither.

SOXAN

The SoxaN collective is a group of Big Chilldren who originally bonded on the Big Chill Forum while everyone else was away in Naxos. Having taken the plunge with their first club night last September, SoxaN has rapidly become synonymous with genre-busting tunes and audiovisual magic. The bumper SoxaN crew playing here at Enchanted Garden includes El Spiros, Pushkin, Miko, Sh*t Bob, bpgz & Sunflower Kate though the rest of the collective’s DJs can be found elsewhere in the line-up too.

TO ROCOCO ROT

The Berlin and Düsseldorf based trio To Rococo Rot are brothers Robert & Ronald Lippok and Stefan Schneider. Their stated aim has always been the transfer of electronic music from the club to everyday life, and with their recent work across the worlds of radio, art and television, that ideal has come one step closer. This is their first visit to the Enchanted Garden, where their sumptuous and restrained instrumental soundscapes should find a natural home.

TOM MIDDLETON

This man needs no introducing here. The one and only Cornish Jedi Knight has played every single Enchanted Garden, not to mention two hugely memorable stints in Naxos and headlining performances at both Big Chill Winter Concerts. Then of course there are his weekly radio shows, online sessions and countless DJ slots all over the world. The man plies his trade hard, and with consummate professionalism. With his massive ‘Sound of the Cosmos’ compilation currently riding high, this is deservedly his moment.

VICTOR DAVIES

It’s been a couple of years since Victor Davies last played a Big Chill, as he has been busy spreading the love through Europe and Japan off the back of his beautiful and long-awaited debut album (released last year on JCR). So let’s give Victor’s heartfelt blend of Latin jazz, folk and soul a big welcome back. Guaranteed to put a fresh breath of summer into your heart.

XAN

If you caught Kinobe at last year’s Enchanted Garden, you will have heard the Brighton-based Xan sing. This year she is performing in her own right with a set of self-penned, shimmering ballads shot through with emotion. Although she has been trying to focus on her own work, Xan has recently been lured into the recording studio by Kinobe, Apollo 440, Charles Webster and Keiren Donley. She will make your heart leap.

ZERO 7

It seems hard to believe that Zero 7’s first live concert was within these gardens only one year ago. Since then they have found themselves catapulted to the top of the pile thanks to the huge success of their debut album, a Mercury Prize nomination, a major tour of the United States, and, of course, countless appearances on chilled compilations. Earlier this year they released their own compilation, ‘Another Late Night’; if you’ve heard its sublime mix of hip hop, soul, jazz and lo-fi pop, then you’ll be primed for one of the most thoroughly enjoyable DJ sets of the weekend.

ZERO GRAVITSKI

Vincent Nayrolles, aka Zero Gravitski, is the man behind bleep, an independent management and A&R company that has done much to bring classical and electronic music together, especially in his native France. Most recently he has been opening shows for David Sylvian and Royskopp in Paris, mixing up classical & electro ambient with hip hop, minimal house and Detroit techno. Here at the Enchanted Garden he will performing a classical set.

Enchanted Garden 2002

June 27th, 2002 by

Enchanted Garden 2002LAMB

When Pete Lawrence asked the Big Chill’s forum dwellers which acts they would most like to hear at this year’s festivals, Lamb’s name came up time and again. Three albums into their career, Louise Rhodes and Andy Barlow have now crafted a powerful live sound that eludes all too many electronic acts, earning them rave reviews in recent months. Combining the purity of Louise’s voice with Andy’s polyrhythmic sensibility, Lamb possess a subtle sensuality that will move your feet and hearts in equal measure.

LAMBCHOP

When Lambchop unveiled the downtempo delights of their new work in the imperious setting of Somerset House’s courtyard last year, certain parts of the crowd declared that they’d be perfect for The Big Chill. It would be no exaggeration to say that getting Kurt Wagner and his huge crew of Nashville homeboys here is thus a dream realised. With their unique blend of ambient country, mournful folk and sweet soul, Lambchop are undoubtedly one of the most interesting and creative acts at work in the US today. Please make them very welcome.

LAURA B

Laura B started life as a little elf hiding under a mountain of moogs.

Having learned all about engineering and production while working with Arthur Baker and the Pet Shop Boys, she released the first piece of her own music on Law and Auder’s ‘The Female of the Species’. This was followed by a wide range of live sets on the UK experimental electronica scene, where she met Pete Lawrence.

Subsequently invited to play both Lulworth Castle and Naxos last year, Laura swiftly established herself as a vital and vibrant new addition to the Big Chill fold. Certainly she is blessed with deep reserves of energy, enthusiasm and love.

Now signed to Big Chill Recordings for her debut LP ‘To My Darling DJ…’, this sonic terrorist, ambient punk and general vibe monster will finally be displaying her skillset to the max, from dark experimental dance grooves to the bliss of her heartbeat-slowing embryonic breathing spaced-in chill-out.

She is truly fantastic.

LEGGO BEAST

Murray Clark has been working within the Pork Recordings sty for nigh on ten years now, originally as a Bullitnut and now as Leggo Beast. Having become one of those DJ-solo-artist types, Murray has subsequently blagged his way around the UK, Europe and further afield (he is a known collaborator with the Russians), while also holding down residences at the Welly Club and The Lamp in his hometown of Hull. He is currently working on an allotment and a third solo album for release on the Pork label. It need hardly be added that his sets for the Big Chill at EG2001 and Naxos last year were top notch trouser jazz.

LEMON JELLY

Last year was a big year for Lemon Jelly. Their first live outing – at the Enchanted Garden – that huge summer single, and more offers of sexual favours than they could reasonably accept. Since then they have had their heads down crafting their new album, ‘Lost Horizons’, which looks set to take their trademark blend of blissful beats and sunny samples to the next level altogether. Catch them here before they emigrate to the Cayman Islands.

LIGHTNING HEAD

Since retiring from Rockers Hi Fi, midi-maestro Glyn ‘Bigga’ Bush has been forging a new sound from the depths of his country retreat in Dorset, combining the frenetic sounds of Brazillian percussion with dub basslines, reggae hooks and Nu Yorican breaks. For his DJ set at this year’s Enchanted Garden, he will be presenting tracks from his forthcoming album ‘Studio Don’ along with exclusive new Bigga Bush tunes, remixes and mash-ups. Music strictly for twenty-first-century open-cast minds.

LOL HAMMOND

Originally inspired to pick up a guitar by seeing The Clash’s legendary performance at the Anti-Nazi League rally in London’s Victoria Park in ’78, Lol Hammond’s own raw energy has been lighting up this country’s music scene ever since.

As a member of the notorious Spiral Tribe, he was involved in some of the 80s’ more audacious parties. As one half of Drum Club, he created innumerable club nights that are still talked about. And as a founding part of Funkt, not to mention Chilli Dog, he has found a way of updating and continuing those traditions into the present day.

More recently, however, Lol has found a second home in The Big Chill, where another, quieter side to his musical genius has flourished. Having collaborated now on album projects with both the brothers Eno (the Brian one is to see the light of day soon), and released his own ‘All This Is Bliss’ to great acclaim earlier this year, his career as a chill-out artist is clearly only just beginning.

With live performances booked for all three of The Big Chill’s summer events, plans in the pipeline for the return of the much-loved Chilli Dog, and a new EP on the cards, 2002 looks set to be a golden year for Lol.

MACH V

Mach V (aka Marky van der Vord) has been mixing up drum and bass, downtempo and breakbeat at events such as SoxaN, Sofa Sessions, The Big Chill, Urbanites, It & Foam for over seven years now – when he is not glued to the Big Chill Forum, that is. This visit to the Enchanted Garden will be his fifth, but his first as a performer: ‘This time, I get to not only play, but also see Miko and many of my SoxaN comrades rip it up on Sunday!’ says Marky. ‘It couldn’t get much better.’

MARK PRITCHARD

As one half of Global Communication (with fellow Cornishman Tom Middleton), Mark Pritchard will always be welcome at any Big Chill. Last year he made a welcome return to the fold with two fine sets at EG2001 and Lulworth respectively, as well as the excellent Harmonic 33 EP. Apparently he has a good deal more where that came from, so we’re hoping he’ll share a little of it with us this weekend.

MIDTEMPO

Raised in a rainforest in remote New Zealand and in the Arctic part of Canada’s far north, Kris now lives deep in rural Dorset where he feels warmer and drier than he has for ages. As ‘midtempo’ Kris builds websites for discriminating clientele (such as The Big Chill), has photography commissioned by visually aware organisations, and DJs for anyone who’ll let him. He prefers Bing Crosby over Frank Sinatra, Citroens over Jags and Vegemite a lot more than Marmite. He also likes cows.

MIXMASTER MORRIS

This Friday it is the Mixmaster’s birthday so we hope you will join us in wishing him many happy returns. Certainly we are only too glad to have him back in the Enchanted Garden, as his legendary last turn on the decks at Naxos last year proved what we have long suspected: few DJs around can marry highly evolved, eclectic taste with crowd-pleasing trickery quite as skilfully as Morris can. He is quite simply without peer, both on and off the decks.

MONKAIBOY

One of the fresh talents unearthed by The Big Chill’s infamous Open Dex sessions, Monkaiboy, aka Kai Daguerre, combine his love of the eclectic and the modern in sets that are as offbeat as they are upbeat. Influenced from an early age by 60′s and 70′s funk, rock and psychedelia courtesy of his left-of-centre parents, Monkaiboy seamlessly blends seemingly disparate musical styles into a funky flow that always keeps his audience guessing as well as giggling.

MONKEY MAGIC

After his irrepressible birth from an egg on a mountain top, Monkey has been a busy beast: Zenmaster events, the 8-deck contemporary dance piece ‘Kinetic’, the renewable energy stage @ the Energy 2000 festival, the more recent 4-deck Monkey Magic & Mr King show – he’s done the lot. Now going solo while Mr King goes ‘bling’ in Oz, Mr Magic is finally releasing some records with the Deep Water record label under both the magic ape persona and as part of the Bathysphere collective. Mind the G.

MR SCRUFF

It is hard to believe that only six years ago Mr Scruff was humble Andy Carthy, part-time art student and full-time electro-ska-hip-hop kid. Since then he has recorded for more than twenty-five record labels, become big in Japan and, indeed, turned the world into his very own private oyster. Who knows what is next for this irrepressible talent – other than a new album born of his love of blues, 2-tone, ska, nasty pop, electro, hip hop, soul, house, funk, jazz, reggae, and chip shops – and, we hope, a day or two off. This is his fourth Enchanted Garden in a row and the first of his two Big Chill festival appearances this year.

Enchanted Garden 2002

June 27th, 2002 by

Enchanted Garden 2002ALUCIDNATION

One of the greatest misapprehensions about chilling out is that it is a low level energy activity. Although it naturally encourages the listener to relax, the best chill out music can also bring about the meditative yet energised state of mind more commonly associated with activities like country walking and yoga. It enlivens your senses and opens fresh connections with the world around you.

Certainly that is the kind of chill out music that Bruce Bickerton, aka alucidnation, likes to make. Don’t be fooled by his laid-back demeanour, however: he is passionate about music and creates it continually and compulsively. ‘If I don’t finish a track in three days,’ he says, ‘I simply move on. I get bored quickly.’

As a result, Bruce has already amassed what he computes to be ten albums’ worth of alucidnation material. For now, we will all have to make do with the tip of the iceberg, ep:02, which is out this month – although he is said to be considering an album later this year if he can finally settle on its contents. Being such a connoisseur of chill out, Bruce is highly selective about what he chooses to release, and the same goes for his live shows, which feature his own photographic work as well as new and unreleased material.

Listen up, and you might just hear some of tomorrow’s classics today.

AJ

If it’s a Big Chill, AJ will be there. Indeed, if it’s anything to do with the more interesting aspects of the music biz, chances are he’ll have some kind of hand in it. Having cut his teeth promoting the likes of Joy Division, Scritti Politti, the Smiths and WOMAD – and dancing onstage with the Clash and the Burundi drummers in ’82 – Alan has subsequently become one of the most eclectic and versatile DJs in the house. His audiovisual collaborations with Jony Easterby were one of the high points of Naxos last year, and alone were worth the price of admission.

AMBA

Never one to rest on his laurels, Tom Middleton has been making music under a variety of different guises for as long as we can remember. Thanks in part to memorable performances at The Big Chill’s last two winter festivals as well as Lulworth Castle last year, his Amba project has earned a special place in our hearts. With his gift for ambient rhythms, beautiful melodies and harmonic detail, this is compositional Middleton at his very best.

AMPHIBIAN

Hailing from the fine city of Melbourne, amphibian are brothers Barry & Matt Hill and Rob Walsh. Together they form an instrumental trio that combines keyboards, drums and double bass with digitally manipulated field recordings and nature samples. Their ambient and electronic music flirts with many genres, but is always played with a jazz sensibility and composed with a nod to classical minimalism. Exactly the kind of original act you’d expect to find in the Enchanted Garden, then.

ANOTHER FINE DAY

One day in the not-too-distant future, when the term ‘world music’ has been gracefully retired, perhaps, the British musicians labouring in that field will gain the recognition they are owed. On that day Another Fine Day will also be celebrated as one of these isles’ most cosmopolitan and talented acts. In the meantime, it is The Big Chill’s pleasure to have Tom Green and co. play their traditional Sunday slot, opening another fine day in Larmer Tree Gardens with their mesmeric mix of electronics, afro-jazz-funky beats, and live instruments.

ANTIBALAS

Afrobeat has long outlived its creator Fela Kuti, leaping across national borders to land in NYC, whence Antibalas (‘bulletproof’) hail. Consisting of anything between fifteen and twenty performers at any one time, this highly acclaimed outfit perform a simmering mix of Kuti tunes and original compositions, seasoned with American funk, horn-section melodies, jazzy impro and a healthy pinch of politics; it shouldn’t surprise you to learn they are signed to Ninja Tune. Antibalas are worthy heirs to the deep, unstoppable groove that Fela set in motion all those years ago now.

BJ COLE

Composer, producer, and unparalleled maestro of the pedal steel guitar, BJ Cole has worked with more top drawer musicians than we care to name. Luke Vibert, John Cale, Harold Budd, and Joan Armatrading are but four, to which illustrious roll-call must the name of The Big Chill’s very own Laura B be added (with whom he will be performing). Originally inspired by The Shadows, Mr Cole’s passion for the steel guitar has taken him all around the world. This is his second visit to the Enchanted Garden.

BADMARSH & SHRI

By drawing upon the exuberant, polyrhythmic legacies of Jamaican ragga, Latin funk, Hackney hip-hop, as well as classical Indian and African rhythms, Badmarsh & Shri have created as varied a soundscape as you are likely to hear all year. As their two fine albums amply establish, theirs is panoramic dance music, pure and simple, so be prepared: their live performances are noted for percussive and exuberant funk.

THE BAYS

In a day and age obsessed with commercial product, The Bays make a refreshing change from the norm. Andy Gangadeen, Nick Cohen, Simon Smugg and Jamie Jimpster Odell do not rehearse or record together – they simply play. And how: they have justly been hailed as one of the most exciting live acts at work today. Sample & sci-fi FX man Simon, the don of Smugg Records, will set the scene for their live performance with some fine summery tunes from his collection.

BLOOD & FIRE SOUND SYSTEM

Reggae music is lucky enough to have some obsessive lovers and collectors who have kept its flame burning brighter than ever. Chief amongst these in the UK is Blood & Fire, to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude for re-issuing so many classic cuts from the likes of the Congos, Yabby You, Horace Andy and King Tubby. If reggae is currently undergoing something of a revival, it’s due in no small part to their efforts. Long may they continue to educate us. This weekend their trusty DJs are joined by a special guest singer, Spikey Tee.

BLU MAR TEN

Never has musical history known such unscrupulous, light-fingered, sample-mongering fellows as these. With less ethics than your average hyena pack, Blu Mar Ten have robbed their way through 20th century music and lifted out the best bits, shamelessly banging them together and passing it off as their own work. Having made their name with two acclaimed Erykah Badu remixes and a number of fine 12?s, it now looks like nothing can stop them from continuing to craft intricately layered music that mixes bassy beats with downtempo delicacy.

BONOBO

Simon Green claims that his Bonobo moniker is the result of a misspent youth in people’s garages across Hampshire, ‘putting guitars through ten distortion pedals and seeing what came out’. Finding he always ended up arguing with his band-mates, he went solo, finishing his stunning debut ‘Animal Magic’ while still at college in Brighton. Advance reports of his new album for Ninja Tune, not to mention his sets in Naxos last year, suggest that he is finding better ways than ever of misspending his youth.

BOOMCLICK

People who like to shake their booty but want more than just anonymous dance beats will find Boomclick are their kind of folk. They create a musical space that evokes many of the musical influences of the Big Chill generation, combining DJ sensibilities with the energy of a live band. For their debut performance at The Enchanted Garden, Rui Teimao, Sam Johnson & Paul Burnley will be joined onstage by a live band to bring alive the full funkyness of the Boomclick experience.

CENTRE EDGE

This time last year Gidon Z Cohen had never used a mixer. Having subsequently discovered the joys of playing his record collection in public with an Open Dex slot at Naxos 2001, his alter ego Centre Edge is finally bringing his mix of ambient, minimalist and leftfield music to its ideal environment. While his ‘Emotience’ promo CD for Raya exemplifies this blissed-out blend, those who have heard his sets for SoxaN and Chilli Dog know that funky world beats, alt.country, post-rock guitars and loud composition also lie close to his heart. Yep, he thanks The Big Chill for changing his life.

CHILLED BY NATURE

Described by Time Out as the ‘Chief Eskimo of Kingdom Chill’, Pete Lawrence is a formative figure in the recent chill-out explosion. He is a man who is passionate about sharing the joys he derives from music with friends both known and unknown.

Needless to say he is also a very busy man these days. Aside from putting on a growing number of Big Chill events at home and abroad, including the Monday night phenomenon that was Chilli Dog, he has been DJing around the globe, from Siberia to Brazil, the Hebrides to Ibiza. And, as if that wasn’t enough to fill a diary, Pete has also been crafting The Big Chill’s own label sound.

Now, following a rare winter quiet period, Pete is finally unleashing his debut solo release this summer – a four-tracker under his artist name Chilled By Nature. This EP follows up and develops the musical and emotional themes raised on Pete’s formative ‘Green Shade’, released on The Big Chill’s ‘Enchanted 01’ collection back in ’99. Think music of quiet beauty for your private solarium.

In celebration of this fact, Pete will be performing an entire set of his own material at the Enchanted Garden – the first time he has done so but, most certainly, not the last.

CO-OP

The CoOp collective are here in force this weekend to bring you the finest in future jazz and broken beats. Expect to hear Afronaut (Bugz in the Attic), Domu (2000Black, Archive), Seiji (Bugz in the Attic, 2000Black), and Alex Attias (Visions.Inc), four energetic talents who have worked with everyone from 4 Hero and Derrick Carter to Phil Asher and Gilles Peterson. The sound of Chicago, Detroit, London and beyond all rolled into one dazzling fusion of beats and pieces.

CUSTOM BLUE

While your regular British mid-twenties songwriting outfits have been busy with crash chords and histrionics, Alex Pilkington and Simon Shippey have allowed shadows, soul, string sections and electronically nuanced suggestion to seep deep into the acoustic heart of their work. Signed in ’99 to Island by Ross Allen, and with a fine debut album under their belt (as well as production work for Beth Hirsch and Kim Brown), Custom Blue are seriously trenchant songwriters and singers whose day has just come.

DADDY G

Grant Marshall, aka Daddy G, agent provocateur of the Wild Bunch, Massive Attack mainman and lynchpin of the Bristol music scene, came to his first Enchanted Garden two years ago. He returned to play the Sanctuary stage last year, unleashing an irrepressible mix of hip hop, R&B and rare groove the like of which has never before been heard in Dorset. It’s a pleasure having him back again – in the Club tent this time.

DEEP WATER ALLSTARS
feat. Normal Position live, with DJ sets from SofaLofa & Hint

After lurking in their studio for a few years, James Cameron, Alex Martin and Frankie decided to unleash the whippet that is Normal Position to have a run about town. A passion for eclecticism coupled with a truly non-formulaic approach to music-making has seen the pair take on many of the country’s more discerning dancefloors and backrooms over the last 12 months. Since signing to Leicester’s Deep Water Recordings label in 2001, Normal Position’s own brand of downbeat lazer-funk has been causing a stir, most recently with their ‘Nylon Whippets’ EP. Catch them at this Chill with Deep DJ stablemates SofaLofa and Hint, the original Beau Selectah….

DIVERSITY.

The name says it all. Currently crafting a collection of songs and themes for release at a future date, Diversity are rarely found behind turntables, oscillating instead between studios in Suffolk and London. Bad habits include recording with the window open so you can hear birdsong in the background of everything recorded in Suffolk; good habits include playing a set for at least one Big Chill festival each year since the Black Mountains, and closing the window in London so you can’t hear the traffic noise.

DJ DEREK

After remarkable performances at the previous two Enchanted Gardens, DJ Derek is rapidly becoming something of an institution round about these parts. And for good reason too: this man knows more about ska, rocksteady, dub and bluebeat than any young blood we might care to mention. By turns hilarious and heart-warming, give it up for the unique and thoroughly loveable talent that is DJ Derek.

DJ KRUSH

A prolific composer, collaborator and remixer, DJ Krush owes his original inspiration to the ‘Wild Style’ movie from the early ’80s. Soon after he formed his first hip hop outfit in his native Tokyo, later going solo in ’92, whereupon he swiftly became known for his pioneering use of turntables as live instruments. With six solo albums as well as countless soundtracks and remixes to his name, Krush remains one of the most innovative turntablists alive.

EVA

Armed with an acoustic guitar, a voice angels would die for, and the company of strings, Eva is a singer-songwriter with majestic vocal talent. Having graced many a Big Chill in the past, including Naxos last year, she is now signed to City Rockers, and is thus finally completing her long-awaited debut LP ‘Glowing Yellow’ with a notable producer at the controls. All will be revealed in time – but until then, here’s a welcome taste of her rare and powerful talent.

FELIX REX / ESOTERICA

Instrumental in bringing the chill vibe to Dublin, Felix Rex was one of the founding members of Cybernia, a collective that included DJs, musicians, performers and visual artists. Since then Felix has become better known for his work remixing Opera Ireland and re-jigging traditional Irish tunes with Kila, as well as his sets for Power FM, Dublin’s leading pirate station.
His performance this weekend will showcase tracks from the forthcoming Esoterica LP ‘In Obscura’, the follow-up to last year’s ‘Repetitive Music’ EP, blending ethnic world musics with classical and electronic.

FREDDIE B.

Wordsmith, webmaster, DJ and MC… like so many of the inhabitants of kingdom chill, there are a number of different facets to Freddie B. What connects them all is a passion for bringing people together, with a special place reserved in his musical heart for soul, reggae and punk. At The Enchanted Garden this year he is honoured to be inaugurating three days of pure Sanctuary by tracing the path that leads from Louis Armstrong to The Clash.

HEXSTATIC

Hexstatic – Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson – kickstarted their career as audiovisual interventionists and VJs extraordinaire at the first Big Chill in 95. Since then they have earned the distinction of releasing the UK’s first completely audiovisual LP as well as providing inspiration to countless up-and-coming talents on the scene. As their show-stopping turns last year in Naxos and the Winter Festival showed, they have learnt a thing or two about multi-dimensional entertainment on the way.

INTERNATIONAL OBSERVER

International Observer are Tom Bailey (the man behind 80′s synth-pop heroes, The Thompson Twins) and turntable selector Rakai Karaitiana. Their debut album ‘Seen’ was released last year on Different Drummer, and its uniquely melodic, instrumental dub has become a favourite of Pete Lawrence, DJ Morpheus and Tom Middleton. They have come all the way from their homes in New Zealand for this weekend, their first Big Chill, so give them a big welcome.

KIERAN*

Joint winner of the Open Dex competition at The Big Chill Winter Festival 2001, and sufferer of heart palpitations and shaky hands ever since. A noted Big Chill FM collaborator, SoxaN regular and partner to Sh*t Bob in the Armitage Shankz Sound System, Kieran* has been loitering at Big Chill events since Norfolk 1996. Raised on radio, pop and a variety of music lessons, he developed a healthy Prince addiction before switching to London pirate radio. He then went raving. The rest is history.
