CHILLED BY NATURE – MUSICAL BOX

It is now just over two years since Big Chill co-founder Pete Lawrence released his own unique brand of cinematic music on the debut Chilled By Nature ‘Solar Powered’ EP. Championed by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster, Pete Herbert, Chris Coco, Phil Mison and Tom Middleton as a forward looking statement of intent, it confirmed Pete’s talent as a composer and arranger as well as a festival organiser, writer and DJ.
After 2003′s season, Pete managed to return to the studio for long enough to finish one of his strongest compositions to date. ‘Musical Box’ is something of a winter’s fairytale, a calm and detached journey across a frozen snow-covered landscape, punctuated by its haunting glockenspiel theme, simplistic rhythm box and live horns.
Label mate Bruce ‘Alucidnation’ Bickerton turns up the dub heat for his own bouncy re-interpretation, adding string pads, vocals and gently skanking guitar for another lucid classic.
Man of the moment, Berliner Ulrich Schnauss pushes things to the outer reaches with his excursion on the version, going for full-on aural gymnastics (headphone listeners beware!), phase shifting and trademark wide-screen production as he processes the glockenspiel riff backwards, adds awesome sub bass and sound effects before the drums come in for a final closing salvo.
