NICK WHITE ON WHAT LIES BENEATH
March 30th, 2005 by rui
Nick White, Bar Supervisor at The Big Chill Bar, tells us about – What Lies Beneath – a new project he’s involved with.
First up, what is What Lie Beneath?
It’s a space for photography, design and apparel.
How did it come together?
I’ve been a photographer for many years and have a huge catalogue of work – which I sell, but it can be hard to find a space to show it.
This will all turn to dust is the shop on the ground floor, which is run by my close friend Craig Simpson. Craig says of This Will all turn to dust “it spins the brand obsessed retail world the wrong way round by turning disposable into treasure.” Craig gave me an opportunity that fell from the sky. He offered me the basement. It is offered to me on a plate and now I’m ready to eat it all up.
The vibe around Brick Lane has been exploding the last couple of years and everything we have is fresh, not been done before. It’s a collaboration between close friends from Falmouth to Hull – I didn’t want to do it alone because it’s a big step. It’s something that each contributor has been working on for a lot of years. It’s funny how as soon as there’s a space in London to show work, everybody has been coming up with material.
What stuff will you be selling?
At opening we’ll have everything from prints from several photographers including myself, Café Society, Murray Clark (Leggo Beast) and Brendan Barry. Lighting systems from Tim Lake’s Clog and Wilder Creative, Home wares from several new designers and apparel designs from The Trust.
When do you open?
We are having a launch party for the space on Friday 1st and the first day when we’re open to the public will be April 2nd. We’ll be opening on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year.
How did you come into contact with The Big Chill?
I went travelling last year. On my first day back in the UK, the bar’s designer Andrew from Department of Design asked me to help out with refitting the bar. From there, I decided to move to London and get busy with this project.
How do enjoy working at the bar
I love it. But I’m sick of the Big Chill Classics Cd. I hear it 315 times a day – I know every beat and bloody word!
