SPACIFIC SOUNDSYSTEM – A PROFILE
April 28th, 2005 by rui
Spacific is a multimedia collective dedicated to promoting creative culture, especially music, from Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Music? From New Zealand? As strange as it may sound, there is an amazingly healthy musical subculture in New Zealand, which has produced many a world class act over the years. Some you may well know, like MC Tali (Full Cycle), FreQ Nasty (Skint), Nathan Haines (Chillifunk), Mark de Clive Lowe (ABB Soul) and Pitch Black (Kog). Others are bubbling up into the overground, such as Fat Freddy’s Drop (Sonar Kollektiv), Salmonella Dub (Dub Conspiracy), Baitercell & Schumacher (Passenger) and The Black Seeds (LOOP).
Spacific exists to represent these acts through concerts and events, mainly in London. Since their first event in August 2001 at Cargo, Spacific has hosted events at Fabric and Neighbourhood in London, Cabaret Voltaire and Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh, La Sal in Barcelona, Taboo and Moby Dick in Madrid, The Melkweg in Amsterdam and Le Batofar in Paris.
Taking it’s inspiration from the Big Chill’s approach to the net, Spacific has spent a great deal of time and energy building a website that provides information not just about their events, but also about other New Zealand orientated events in Europe, as well as biographies of artists, features on different aspects of creative culture from New Zealand and links to online stores selling New Zealand music CDs.
The Spacific Soundsystem plays 100% New Zealand content, and currently has a residency at The Big Chill Bar on the second Wednesday of the month.
