Joanna Briscoe – A profile
June 21st, 2005 by rui
Joanna Briscoe was born in London and moved westwards until her family settled on Dartmoor. She rebelled against their ethos of Indian cults and macrobiotic diets by becoming a swot and returned to London the moment she left school.
Her first job was interviewing formerly fat people for Weight Watchers Magazine. She then went freelance and wrote for the Guardian, Times, Sunday Times, Observer, Independent, Standard, Elle and Vogue among others.
Her first novel, Mothers and Other Lovers, won the Betty Trask Award. Her second, Skin, was about cosmetic surgery and the beauty industry. Sleep with Me, published in July 05, is described by Julie Myerson as “scary, seductive and frighteningly readable.” She now lives in London with her family, writing, travelling, and taking the kids to school.
Joanna writes a regular column for The Guardian
