VARIOUS ARTISTS – SHAPES RED (TRU THOUGHTS)

June 10th, 2005 by

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SHAPES RED (TRU THOUGHTS)The latest instalment in Tru Thoughts series of sampler compilations is Shapes Red. It’s pretty much business as usual, presenting a range of exclusive tracks, remixes and tasters of albums to come. If there is a change to the remit, it’s that the kaleidoscope of styles present on the compilation is even more varied than on the previous “Yellow” and “Blue” versions.

From string laden soul slow burners to bass heavy Bollywood flecked beats and on through disco, latin and Hint’s new broken beat sound one thing remains constant – the quality. The previous “Shapes” compilations had occasional lesser tracks but with this release, it’s genuinely hard to pick out any that are less well polished or beguiling. This also helps the compilation hang together as a whole album, making it an enjoyable listen from beginning to end.

Sadly, there is always a pay off to such praise, and in this case it’s that having heard, “Why Me” by Kinny and Horne, or indeed many of the other tracks, it will be hard to resist going out and buying the full album releases. I’m sure one day Tru Thoughts will slip up and release a duff record, but it’s certainly not this one.
