Warm head honcho and discerning DJ-about-town Ali Tillett casts his ears over a selection of singles and albums…

Fink – Pretty Little Thing/Biscuits – Ninja Tune

Fink returns to the fold after being locked away in his studio in Brighton. Up first is a quirky little acoustic ditty of a track in the form of “Pretty Little Thing” – a snapping, snaring little acoustic number which has an edge of eerieness about it. For fans of Jose Gonzalez and Sufjan Stevens go check this out. Finks vocals often seem to fit perfectly against the acoustic soundscape, where the simplest of things seem to prick the ears of the listener – and this is definitely one of those. On the other hand ‘Biscuits’ after a few plays had a charming edge to it which seemed to lodge itself in my head. In the current musical climate, it will be interesting to see how Fink fairs in the singer/songwriter battle. Definitely someone to keep an ear out this year when his LP drops…and something i didn’t expect from the Ninja camp.

Lindstrom – Another Station 12″ (w/ Todd Terje Remix) – Feedelity

Man of the moment Hans-Peter Lindstrom steps up again with another piece of electronic balearic-esque dynamite. This time starting off with a samba-style electronic shuffle, the track slowly wigs out with a twisting whirl that just builds and builds – and then drops into a reminiscent balearic piano and then speeds off into the distance on another Lindstrom ride. On the flip, fellow Norwegian discoid genius Todd Terje steps up and does not hang around turning the track into a peaktime monster with a pulsating bassline that will get any dancefloor moving. Theres definitely something in the Norwegian water and they have made a sound which will be around for years to come! Be quick though as theres only 300 of these beauties around so if you see – buy!

Albums/Compilations:
Super Numeri – The Welcome Table LP – Ninja Tune

Sometimes you put a CD on and straightaway after reading the information and only the first few bars of the music it shouts out to you that for you to understand the artist and album you would have to see them live. Thats what grabbed me with Super Numeri. The Liverpool collective return with another psyched out monster of an LP. The first track ”The First League of Angels’ at a collosal 25 minutes long wouldn’t be out of place back in the cosmic sixties. With varying influences and sounds popping up throughout the LP the world of Super Numeri seems to be one of various cultures and influences from anything from jazz to funk to rock and anything in between. Whilst ‘Buzzard Fly’ wigs out on a slightly psychadelic trip, ‘The Chart’ seems to effortlessly provide a cinematic groove which just makes you nod along. As an LP i couldn’t really submerse myself into but for me to understand the world of Super Numeri I would have to see them live. Interesting!

Various Artists – Nicci Cheeks presents HipHop Love Jazz – Kwerk

In the world of compilations and with a market completely glutted by quantity rather than quality its always a breath of fresh air when one grabs you – but unfortunately this wasn’t one! Having been picking up hip hop bits over the past few years from labels such as Kajmere, ABB, BBE. etc i was quite intrigued to see what could grab me from this brand new compilation from Nicci Cheeks. The main annoyance for me was the continual interludes between tracks, however there was one highlight – Kim Hills’ ‘Nutshell’ which is a sublime piece of new electronic soul.
