BEN SMITH – SINGLE REVIEW – 10 JANUARY 2006

The Rolling Stones – Rain Fall Down (Ashley Beedle Re-Edits) – Virgin 12”
The story goes that Mick personally phoned Ashley Beedle to thank him for the great job he’d done with this re-edit. And ol’ rubberlips is right – this is truly brilliant. Ashley has done a first class job adding a new, almost baggy beat, sublime strings and making the edit more dynamic for the dancefloor. Harking back to the sound of the disco-rock anthem ‘Miss You’, this track originally taken from the Stones latest album ‘A Bigger Bang” has got everything required to make it a classic.

Sharon Jones and The Dapkings – I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In – Daptone 7”
An ace soul-funk cover of the classic Kenny Rogers song (you may remember it from the dream sequence in The Big Lebowski) by the always funky Sharon Jones. Recorded in the classic raw style that Daptone have become known for, this 7” packs more punch than a heavyweight boxer.

Quantic Soul Orchestra – End Of The Road/San Sebastian Strut – Tru-Thoughts 7”
‘End Of The Road’ is a 7” edit of the track from the last QSO album and very good it is too with Alice Russell belting out the soul vocals, but the real gem here is the B-Side ‘San Sebastian Strut’. A previously unreleased live favourite recorded in one take at a practice session, its now being released after Will Quantic took to playing it in his DJ sets from CDR. The QSO sound like a summer stroll through hazy Spanish back streets and deliver one of their most charming pieces so far.
Out 23rd January
The Go! Team – Ladyflash – Memphis Industries 12”
This new version of Ladyflash from their Mercury Nominated album ‘Thunder Lightning Strike’ comes with a variety of remixes. The familiar chaotic funk of the original sits well with the pick of the versions as Kevin Shields bootlegs ‘Ladyflash’ with fellow album track ‘Huddle Formation’. RJD2 is responsible for some beat beat atrocities that don’t warrant mentioning further and Simian Mobile Disco do their electropunkfunk thing, which has been picking up big love from Alkan, Da Bank, Mylo and other diverse luminaries.
Out 30th January
