RAPHAËL MARIONNEAU – ARTIST PROFILE

In 1970 raphaël marionneau was born in nantes, france. with his passion for music, he started to work as dj in various radio stations (radio nantes, radio saga, etc.) when he was 17 years old and studied graphicdesign and worked in the same city until 1993.
raphaël moved to hamburg, germany in 1993 and started to work as art-director in the design studio peter schmidt group. in 1994, he started to work for the mojo club as graphic designer and art-director. he designed all the flyers, posters and the graphic communication until that
mojo closes in 2003.
in october 1996, raphaël marionneau created the event le café abstrait and was the resident of the very successful french chill-out club, once a month at the mojo club. his club – the first chillout event in hamburg and one of the first in germany – received a great feedback by the public and the press. from 1996 to 2003, le café abstrait etablished itself as a legendary event in hamburg and the most successful chillout club of germany, internationally renowned.
raphaël marionneau’s personnal style of music (a mix of ambient, chillout, downtempo, trip-hop, ibiza sounds, oriental and classical music, etc…) became a name called the french chillout. raphaël is considered by the press as one of the most innovative djs in germany and was invited to play in many events, venues and festivals during the past years .
in 2001, he founded with dj nartak the hamburger music label jubilee records where he was designer and music-consultant. the label released the havanna boys, deep-dive-corp., orbient, hippiehaus and many more…
with the success of his club, raphaël marionneau created in 2002, his label abstrait music and compiled a serie of chillout albums called le café abstrait. his compilations are considered as one of the best chillout series in germany of the last past years.
in june 2001, raphaël marionneau launched le classique abstrait at mojo club, a chillout event with classical music. every 4 monthes, in the same room installation than for le café abstrait, le classique abstrait became a great feedback by the public and was one of the first classical clubbing concept in germany.
in summer 2002, for the release of the 3rd volume of his compilation le café abstrait, raphaël did a tour in 12 cities over germany to present his new album and his club concept. during 2 monthes, raphaël played in many famous venues like luna club (kiel), sage club (berlin), karlstorbahnhof (heidelberg), mahagoni bar (ausburg), etc…
from summer 2001 until february 2003, raphaël had is show on the german broadcast klassik radio, 2 times a week: on thursdays from 22.00 to 00.00 and sundays from 20.00 to 22.00.
raphaël mixed 2 hours classical music and new classics with ads and text. le classique abstrait bei klassik radio was really unconventional and was listened by more than 70.000 listeners every shows and won 20% more listeners in one year.
in summer 2001, raphaël was referent during a conference about classical music and in the popkomm trade fair (cologne) and released his first classic album: le classique abstrait by raphaël marionneau (universal/ deutsche grammophon). the 2nd volume has been released in april 2004.
for the seasons 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, raphaël presented le classique abstrait in konzerthaus dortmund (germany) during 4 events/year. his classical event on the scene of the concerthall with more than 150 guests is very successful and sold-out every sessions.
the event is scheduled during the season 2004-2005.
in summer 2003, raphaël created and mixed during the open-air event l’été abstrait for 3 nights at sandworld 2003, the sand sculpture festival in travemünde (near lübeck). more than 1.000 visitors were present during each event.
in 2003-2004, raphaël presents le voyage abstrait, a multivisual show at the planetarium hamburg, every month.
raphaël marionneau created in 1999 a complete concept called abstrait network with diverse activities: abstrait music (cd compilation production), le voyage abstrait (special event in planetarium hamburg), le classique abstrait (classical event), le classique abstrait bei klassik
radio (radio show), abstrait in kiel (chillout event), le concert abstrait (concerts), le noël abstrait and l’été abstrait (summer and christmas special events), etc.
he is the founder and creative head at the design studio the etrema project and works as art-director and designer for differents agencies and clients in hamburg.
