IF MUSIC\'S TOP PICKSTommi Sparxx – Misery/Jazz conversation

Amel Larrieux’s ‘Sweet Misery’ is reworked exquisitely by Mr Sparxx; the drums are simple yet very effective and extremely heavy, and the contrast of these slicingly(!?) fresh beats with jazz loops and poignant vocal is a match made in dj heaven.

Bringing hip house soundly into the 21st century, the flipside features a wicked dancefloor cut, fitting Stetsasonic’s anthem ‘Talkin All That Jazz’ snugly over a solid four to the floor, piano led jazz instrumental. Quality.

Belleruche – The Itch (Hippoflex)

The second limited 7 inch from ridiculously talented London 3-piece Belleruche is easily as superb as the first. Self-described turntable soul music, the title track is surely that and more, with huge appeal for funk and hip hop djs alike. This heavy, bass-driven funk/rock/soul cut has been tearing up dancefloors since its release with a sound reminiscent of Betty Davis with sprinkling of Portishead.

The band’s love of old vinyl, jazz and real soul music really shines through on ‘thirteen-six-thirtyfive’; it is a real treat. Melancholy acoustic guitar sets the tone and Kathrin’s heartbreaking vocal needs to be heard to be believed.

Get in quick to secure yourself one of the last copies of this little gem and look out for Belleruche live at Cargo on March 24th.

IF MUSIC\'S TOP PICKSIf Music point us in the direction of the best stuff that’s on the shelves of their London shop…

YOUNGBLOOD BRASS BAND – AKE FROM THE 12″ EP NUCLEAR SUMMER (LAYERED MUSIC)
Like a full beam head-on collision between Photek and Cinematic Orchestra comes the achingly brilliant D&B minimilism of ‘Ake’. Miles Davisesque in it’s sensitivity and sonics ( think Panthelassa remix LP ). Had this live composition been released around the ’96 period everyone and their mothers would have been all over this like a rash. Unfortunately this style of D&B is not as popular as once was, shame we hear you scream. Beautiful is an understatement…

DEMIEN – BALLAD OF AMANDA BLUE (From the 12″ EP) AMANDA BLUE (COUNTERFLOW)
Recorded at the Legendary Jazzy Jeff’s A Touch Of Jazz Studio and released via Plantlife’s initial label Counterflow hails a man who is gonna give John Legend, Van Hunt et al a right run for their money in the MTV/ Grammy stakes in years to come. Taken from his debut LP ‘ Supernova Syndrome’, ‘ Ballad of Amanda Blue’ is one of those sloe, dirty southern fried soul songs that make babies happen .It’s got everything: Keys, dope live drums, electric guitar, perfect backing harmonies and lead vocals that will have girlies doing strange things with their underwear…
