Tommi Sparxx – Misery/Jazz conversation
Amel Larrieux’s ‘Sweet Misery’ is reworked exquisitely by Mr Sparxx; the drums are simple yet very effective and extremely heavy, and the contrast of these slicingly(!?) fresh beats with jazz loops and poignant vocal is a match made in dj heaven.
Bringing hip house soundly into the 21st century, the flipside features a wicked dancefloor cut, fitting Stetsasonic’s anthem ‘Talkin All That Jazz’ snugly over a solid four to the floor, piano led jazz instrumental. Quality.
Belleruche – The Itch (Hippoflex)
The second limited 7 inch from ridiculously talented London 3-piece Belleruche is easily as superb as the first. Self-described turntable soul music, the title track is surely that and more, with huge appeal for funk and hip hop djs alike. This heavy, bass-driven funk/rock/soul cut has been tearing up dancefloors since its release with a sound reminiscent of Betty Davis with sprinkling of Portishead.
The band’s love of old vinyl, jazz and real soul music really shines through on ‘thirteen-six-thirtyfive’; it is a real treat. Melancholy acoustic guitar sets the tone and Kathrin’s heartbreaking vocal needs to be heard to be believed.
Get in quick to secure yourself one of the last copies of this little gem and look out for Belleruche live at Cargo on March 24th.
