BEN SMITH SINGLE REVIEW - 3RD APRIL 2006Found – Mullokian – Surface Pressure 7”
The Beta Band. That’s what springs to mind when you first hear this Edinburgh band made up of three friends from art collage and a musical chum. While there are obvious comparisons to the Beta Band, they are merely travelling along a similar path rather than homage to their country fellows. Mullokian is their first recording and it’s a very impressive 3 and a half minutes of skewed 21st century pop music. Singer Ziggy Campbell’s charismatic vocals, thick with Scottish drawl, spin yarns amongst an impressive array of instrumentation heavily effected by echo and reverb and all manner of electronic trickery. It seems appropriate that the B-side is a cracking dub remix of the original. Their recent live shows in London were incendiary and forthcoming album ‘Found Can Move’ looks set to be a 2006 classic. Real talent to watch out for.
Out Now

Gorillaz – Kids With Guns (Hot Chip Remix) – Promo 12”
This match up combines these two ultra-now acts for a near perfect remix. Hot Chip’s electro-soul production is one of their most dancefloor-orientated pieces of music yet and Damon’s voice fits so well that it sounds like this should be the original mix. So far this isn’t set for release but its well worth hunting down on promo.
Released? Hunt for it!

Various Artists – Taster 3 EP – Cookshop 12”
This VFM package is rammed full of musical treats, varying from cinematics to Latin jazz to hip-hop to drum ‘n’ bass! Norway’s Implosion Quintet supplies two pieces to open and close the record in a graceful fashion, Brighton locals Scarf Face and Elemental both drop bounce-able beats, Summer comes early courtesy of The Outerlectuals and label founder La Femme gets D’n’B sambarific. A jolly assortment of tracks with something for everyone…or everything for someone!
Released 1st May

Jim Noir – My Patch (Hot Chip Remix) – My Dad Recordings 12”
Another Hot Chip remix here, haven’t they been busy?! The original updates the Summer of Love for the 00’s recalling Small Faces, The Kinks and obviously The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Sunny and melodic yet concealing a dark side of maliciousness through its lyrical refrain of “If you ever step on my patch, I’ll bring you down, I’ll bring you down.” Hot Chip’s technofied remix clips the vocals and heads off to all sorts of bonkers destinations, often at the same time. This comes on blue vinyl too!
Released 1st May
