FINK – BISCUITS FOR BREAKFAST (NINJA TUNE)

April 20th, 2006 by

FINK - BISCUITS FOR BREAKFAST (NINJA TUNE)Ninja Tune are excited about this one and rightly so. Fink – a name that conjures up classy downtempo jazzy and funky nuggets of exquisite quality – leaves all his electronic studio toys alone, picks up an acoustic guitar and starts singing. A brave move, one might think, to try and reinvent yourself after just getting your reputation established, but now I’ve heard the results, I’m pretty excited about it too.

It could be seen as a cynical move to try and establish a Ninja enclave in the new, up and coming market and media attention of folk and americana, but after just listening to the opening bars of the first track “Pretty Little Things” you can tell that that’s not what is going on here. Oh, no – this is something special.

Fink sounds like he was born with a guitar strapped to him. His voice, an expressive, southern US twanged, breathy drawl is perfect for the tunes and each one is a winner. He even takes time out to cover an Alison Moyet’s “All Cried Out” in an almost John Martyn style and not only gets away with it, makes a good claim on the tune as his own.

Simply recorded and beatiful produced the whole album is a pleasure to listen to – think the laidbackness of Greyboy with a cooled down G Love and Special Sauce on the backing, with the song writing talents of the Band’s Robbie Robertson & and maybe a smattering of Jeff Buckley (but not too much) and you’ve somewhere close to getting what Fink has managed to do here.

Buy on Sight.
