BEN SMITH’S SINGLE REVIEW
June 6th, 2006 by rui
Ben Smith takes us on a tour of this week’s hot 12s…
Tuff Love – We Soul Survivors EP – Soulclap 12”
From this new imprint by the people behind Above The Clouds Recordings comes two remixes of classic 90’s hip-hop classics. The men responsible are Hoop and Lil’ Gav, Longtime residents at London’s Fidgit night, who form part of the Tuff Love collective. Hoop’s version of ‘Take You There’ by Pete Rock & CL Smooth is a warm soul-fuelled slow burner while Lil’ Gav’s take on of ‘Born To Live’ by OC is a jazzier affair. Both are more than well done and obviously a work of love and respect for the original artists.
Out Now
Zero DB – A Pomba Girou/Te Quiero – Ninja Tune 12”
Zero DB’s innovative mix of Brazilian, hard jazz, electro and techno has attracted the attention of many, including Ninja Tune who release their debut album ‘Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines’ in September. ‘A Pombo Girou’ combines samba with outrageously large electronic bass…and I mean outrageously large! ‘Te Quiero’ continues along a similar theme throwing a multitude of percussion into the mix. Zero DB are anything but formulaic and twist the Latin/Brazilian genre into something a whole lot darker and unexpected.
Released 19th June
Lost Idol – Firmly Rooted – Cookshop 12”
‘Firmly Rooted’ is a taster of what to expect from Lost Idol’s debut album ‘Utters From A Cluttered Mind’ released later this year and also comes with two remixes. The original is a melancholy piece of late night jazz featuring Quentin Collins (Basement Jaxx/Omar) on trumpet and sits very nicely alongside acts like Cinematic Orchestra. The dancefloor is taken care of firstly by Hint, who produces a remix taking in smooth funk alongside his usual skewed Futureboogie beats and bass style while Implosion Quintet’s ‘Bastard Samba’ remix is a real treat – with cut ‘n’ paste samples, samba beats and fat, fat bass.
Released 3rd July
