Open Dex Winner Q & A
July 5th, 2006 by rui
We get the skinny from Richard, winner of the very tough Open Dex competion where DJs competed at The Big Chill Bar for a slot at the festival…
What’s your real name?
Richard Gibbons
What’s your DJ name?
I don’t have one, so the same as above.
What tunes did you play in the heat and then the final?
Heat -
Brian Auger And Julie Driscoll ‘A Word About Colour’
Linda Hoyle And Affinity ‘United States Of Mind’
The Pentangle ‘Light Flight’
The Strawbs ‘Or Am I Dreaming?’
Bubblegum Machine ‘I Wonder’
The Millenium ‘Prelude’
Raymond Guiot ‘Primitive Spirit’
The Pawnshop ‘Telegraph Is Calling’
Dave Pike Set ‘Raga Jeeva Swara’
Final -
Lesley Duncan ‘Love Song’
April Orchestra ‘Carrellata’
Elephant’s Memory ‘Old Man Willow’
The Roundtable ‘Scarborough Fair’
The Pentangle ‘I Saw An Angel’
Paul Parrish ‘English Sparrow’
Yamasuki ‘Yama Yama’
Marsha Hunt’s 22 ‘(Oh No! Not) The Beast Day’
Johnny Almond’s Music Machine ‘Solar Level’
How would you describe your style of music?
Erm, I would struggle! I try and join the dots between folk, jazz,
psychedelia, soundtracks, heavy prog, fuzzy garage, 60′s pop, lounge,
oddball funk, whatever. People like Andy Votel, Chris Arthur, Godsy
Cherrystones and John Stapleton inspire me.
What’s your desert island disc?
Right now, at this minute, it’s ‘Mantle Piece’ by the Battered
Ornaments. I’ll change my mind in a moment though…
Have you been to The Big Chill before?
I’ve been for the last few years. I generally prefer going to gigs in
small venues and I thought that festivals were all about getting muddy
for the weekend and listening to the latest hyped bands, and that never
really appealed to me. But a few friends persuaded me that The Big Chill
was different and they were right. Obviously I’ve now jinxed the
wonderful weather of the previous two festivals and for that I must
apologise. But nothing I say will wreck the line-up.
How are you feeling about this year’s festival?
I’m looking forward to it, as always. Well, even more than usual as the
chance to enjoy the festival and also play records there is fantastic.
What do you do to chill out?
What, apart from finding and listening to music? I enjoy rock climbing
(very badly!) although I haven’t been able to fit much in at all this
year. It’s a good excuse to get out into some spectacular countryside.
What’s the Best Thing Ever?
Happiness. And maybe a chocolate fondue fountain with friends.
