4hero – Play With The Changes
January 29th, 2007 by rui
Elvis Costello’s quote ‘writing about music is like dancing about architecture’ has always been most apt when attempting to describe a 4hero production. This isn’t a sycophantic statement claiming that everything they touch turns to gold.. oh no, it’s better than that!
Nearly two decades spent outputting some seriously essential releases, and it appears that Marc Mac and Dego’s inimitable mixed-up style has peaked in their latest LP ‘Play With The Changes’.
To back up this missive would mean pulling apart and dissecting the beauty, the harmonies, and those layers of instrumentals that have been smoothly, deliberately, methodically, painstakingly tweaked in their Dollis Hill studio… So, just how to you dance about such fine architecture? It’s impossible verbalising such personal powerful twangs (unless you’re a poet!).
February’s first single ‘Morning Child’, Carina Andersson’s follow up anthem to Les Fleur, is a big-band string number that has been getting hammered over the airwaves. ‘Look Inside’ adopts the catchiest 4hero-esque singalong sound.
Boosting your spirits high, 4hero are always quick to wind you back in, with the help of guest balladeers including Ursula Rucker and Jody Watley (real not reality talent, thank the sweet lord). Chunks of ‘Sink or Swim’ will attract the remixers out there. The title track achieves what most 4hero tunes do, it puts you on an upbeat spiral. ‘Take My Time’ is one for the bedroom (probably). And Stevie Wonder fans will love ‘Superwoman’.
Those in favour of beats for the head and lovesongs laced with orchestral strings, should support our homeboys and bid them luck with this their latest international calling card. This is their sixth album, their 25th century soul still sounds fresh, and Play With The Changes is already being touted far and wide as a 2007 musical highlight. Forget all that touching gold stuff, these guys deserve platinum sales.
Play With The Changes by 4hero is released Feb 5th 2007 on Raw Canvas.
4hero celebrate the launch with a party at The Big Chill House on Friday, 23rd February.
