Open Dex 2006 – The Winner’s Story

January 11th, 2007 by

Open Dex 2006 - The Winner's StoryAfter a gruelling competition, an overall winner of Open Dex 2006 was crowned before being whisked off to play at The Big Chill festival at Eastnor. Who was he, and what was the Open Dex experience like for him?

What’s your real name/DJ name?
I am Richard Gibbons (although I also sometimes go by my online name of Rich Hero – I should have thought that one through a little more thoroughly!).

Where do you call home?
Saffron Walden, in Essex.

What inspired you to enter Open Dex?
I just wanted to see if any normal people would appreciate the music I’m into.

How did you find the heats and final at the bar?
Really nervewracking! My hands shook for the first few tunes of the both sessions which wasn’t ideal. But once I’d settled down I started to enjoy it. Nettie and Kate were stars and made us all feel relaxed and welcome, and the other contestants were friendly too. It was a challenge but it all added up to a very fun experience.

What music do you play?
All manner of psychedelic nonsense, from folk to jazz to prog to soul to krautrock to garage, and all points in between. With loads of heavy drums.

How did you feel when you won?
I honestly didn’t expect to win either the heat or the final as the standard of both was very high. It was a huge rush when my name was read out and I felt like I was walking on air for days.

What was it like playing at the festival?
It was surreal to look out and see my friends sitting out in the sunshine, while I played music out across the countryside. And I managed to waylay a few of Norman Jay’s congregation on their way to Sunday worship. It was also great to glimpse the mechanics of the festival – I didn’t realise the logistics involved. And, as expected, everyone working behind the scenes was as friendly as the punters.

Have you played anywhere else since?
Yep, I’ve played a few times at the Big Chill Bar and the House. I’ve played with the B-Music crew. I’ve played at the ICA as part of the Illustrated London Noise. I’ve supported Voice Of The Seven Woods, Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, Beth Orton and the mighty Wolf People. And I’m playing at Brighton Beach and ILN’s new Sunday Social sessions this month. Taking part in the competition has given me the motivation to get myself out there a bit more.

Have you got any tips for aspiring Open Dex DJs?
Don’t try and second guess the judges as you never know what will float their boat. Play the music you know, love and feel at home with. Then, even if you don’t win you’ll have properly represented yourself. And most importantly, enjoy it!

You’ve got one record to play in a DJ battle. What record do you play and why?
‘Funky March’ by Pound Of Flesh. Huge, pounding drums, big brass and a funky flute – if this doesn’t get heads nodding and feet tapping at the very least then I’m at the wrong party.

Thank-you!

Open Dex is back!
