FEDERATED PUTS FAITH IN INTERNET, UPDATES MACYS.COM FOR HOLIDAYS.(Business)

Seattle Post-Intelligencer November 19, 1998 | Sommer, Constance Declaring this holiday season a watershed for Internet shopping, Federated Department Stores Inc. launched a revamped version of its Macys.Com site yesterday, but said a Bon Marche Web site would not appear until at least next year.

“I think this will be a very defining year for the Internet,” said Macys.Com President Kent Anderson. “More and more adults are shopping online for the first time.” The new Web site, he said, “is a way for us to extend the Macy’s brand nationally.” Macy’s also launched a nationwide catalog earlier this year.

The site, which offers more than 250,000 items for sale, first went online in 1996 and just finished its fourth major face lift. Nordstrom’s new Web site, in contrast, began selling clothes, accessories and other items last month and currently offers about 500 items for sale. go to site macys printable coupons

Cincinnati-based Federated has one other Web site, for Bloomingdale’s, the company’s other national brand. Its regional chains, like The Bon Marche in the Pacific Northwest, will not get a Web presence until sometime in 1999, Anderson said. When they do, it will be modeled after Macys.Com. In the meantime, Federated hopes customers of The Bon and other regional chains will shop at the Macy’s site. “We’ve obviously been looking at our other brands,” he said. “The platform we built for Macy’s is flexible, and gives us the ability to clone it and expand it.” The Bon’s first appearance online will probably be limited to a purely promotional site, said Gary Yiatchos, The Bon’s senior vice president of marketing and sales promotion. go to website macys printable coupons

The Seattle-based department store chain hopes to be selling online by December 1999, but much will depend on how Macys.Com performs, Yiatchos said.

“They are paving the way for the corporation at this point,” he said. “We’ll learn a lot in terms of what categories sell and what doesn’t sell. This is a huge learning curve.” P-I reporter Constance Sommer can be reached at 206-448-8022 or constancesommer@seattle-pi.com Sommer, Constance
