Wayne McGregor | Random Dance – Biography
From choreographing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to directing opera at La Scala and live dance for Glastonbury…. Wayne McGregor is unique in the contemporary dance world. In 2006, the 38 year-old choreographer, who has never taken a ballet class in his life, was appointed the resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet.
At the Big Chill, McGregor arrives with Erazor – a piece created for his own company, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, performed to a piece of electronic music by Plaid.

Deemed a maverick from early on in his career, McGregor has distinguished himself through a physically demanding and unique movement vocabulary, always keen to explore new technologies and the science behind human movement. He has created work, amongst others, for San Francisco Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, NDT1, Stuttgart Ballet, English National Ballet, Paris Opéra and The Royal Ballet.
Music has always been integral to McGregor’s work, evident in the eclectic mix of composers he has collaborated with – Sir John Tavener, Scanner, Plaid, Joby Talbot and Jon Hopkins.
McGregor’s fascination with the technology of the human body fuels his work. In Amu (2005) he explored the functions and the symbolism of the heart, in Ataxia (2004) the connection between brain and body movement and in his present work, Entity (world premiere at Sadler’s Wells in April 2008, currently on tour) the links between artificial intelligence and choreography. "I get bored very easily," he says, "so I always find challenges to keep myself awake" [Wayne McGregor, The Independent]. So far, this state of mind has fuelled an exceptional career.
