Daedelus – Q&A
March 13th, 2008 by sparkyVictorian Dandyman and sonic experimentalist, Alfred Darlington (aka Daedelus), made a rare London appearance at The Big Chill House on Tuesday October 7th. We caught up with the man himself just before his arrival at The Big Chill festival this summer. Here’s what he had to say for himself…
How would you describe your performance?
Let’s Get Physical or perhaps possibly more accurately Wave Of Mutilation, or even better still Pure Imagination.
How many people will be involved?
One conductor/button tamer.
How much time have you spent preparing?
I was born on Halloween, 1977 so ever since then I guess.
What should we look or listen out for?
Some Victorian coat-tails wagging to thoroughly modern music.
What’s your latest release called and how do you feel about it?
Most recently it’s “Love To Make Music To” on Ninja Tune, and it is largely as the title implies.
What will you be wearing?
I usually try for Dandy attire, Victorian period wear, but let’s be honest festivals aren’t made for the well dressed man. They are >the dominion of comfort and practicality, especially at someplace as full-on as the Big Chill. But I’ll anyways be done up, no matter.
What should your audience wear?
What else but fancy dress and older period attire, if I’m going to make the effort I hope for nothing less from my audience.
Describe yourself in one sentence.
Ahem.
Where are you from?
Sunny Santa Monica, California
What was the last thing to make you laugh?
It involved a cat yawning.
If you were an object, what would you be?
If I we’re a hammer I’d hammer in the morning.
Camping, hotel, tour-bus or home to sleep?
Sleep? There’s little time for something so frivolous.
Have you been to the Big Chill before?
I am virginal in this regard.
If no, what are you expecting it to be like?
I expect the world, I’ve heard such positives my expectations are sky high…
Daedelus – Biography
With a string of releases on Plug Research, Hefty, Tigerbeat 6, Eastern Development, Alpha Pup, Mush, and Ninja Tune, Daedelus has refined a style that has no imitators. Contrasting IDM styled cut-ups with childlike arrangements from the 30s and 40s, he has created a sound that is entirely new. His productions find the hidden common denominator between modern electronics and sampled music from days gone by. Recording out of Santa Monica, Daedelus also incorporates hip-hop into his mix, with guest spots from Busdriver, MF Doom, TTC, Mike Ladd, Absract Rude, Madlib, and High Priest (Anti-Pop Consortium). His live show, which utilizes a custom-built sample trigger device and software package, has amazed audiences across the US, Europe, and Japan and secured his reputation as one of the most exciting producers in electronic music.
