Elvis McGonagall’s first public performance took place on Saturday, 11th October, 2003 at the UK Allcomers’ Slam in Cheltenham where he somehow finished runner-up.
In June 2006 Elvis won the World Slam championship at the Poetry International festival in Rotterdam after previously winning the 2006 Spokefest UK Slam Championship at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East in London, the 2004 UK Allcomers’ Slam championship at the Cheltenham Literary Festival and the 2003 Farrago UK Slam.
In 2005 he was part of the UK team that performed at the 4 Nations’ Slam at Hammer & Tongue in Oxford and, along with the magnificently hirsute Henry Bowers from Sweden, he represented Europe in the Hammer & Tongue 4 Continents’ Slam Tour of the UK in 2006.
Elvis currently appears as one of the poets occasionally in residence on BBC Radio 4’s “Saturday Live” and has also featured on BBC Radio 4′s "Material World" and on BBC Radio 7’s “Poetry Stand Up” and on Resonance 104.4 FM. He was poet-in-residence at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival.
Elvis has performed at venues and festivals up and down the UK including the Gilded Balloon at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Cheltenham Literary Festival, the Swindon Festival of Literature, the Oxford Literary Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Leicester Comedy Festival, Reading Comedy Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival, Frome Festival, the Camden Fringe Festival, Hammer & Tongue at The Zodiac in Oxford and The Komedia in Brighton, Express Excess, Shortfuse, The Old Vic Theatre, The Colony Club Room and the Red Rose Comedy Club in London, as well as The Bonnie Prince Charlie Karaoke Klub in Kirkcaldy and Mr Bing’s Cantonese Cocktail Lounge in Cowdenbeath.
Elvis is the compere of the notorious Blue Suede Sporran Club.
