Joseph Coelho – Biography
Joseph Coelho is a writer who started life as a performance poet back in 2000, drowning butterflies with a bottle of Becks. Since then he has performed widely at venues nationwide. As a straight performer he has been several times to Edinburgh including once as the lead of ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ with Sedos, he also performed for five months at the Unicorn Theatre and on tour with the Theatre Centre show ‘Journey to the Riversea’.
This May he will be performing a new comedy at the Brighton Festival, ‘Blame us’ by Limited Liabilities. This comes straight after appearing at Battersea Arts Centre in a rehearsed reading of his one man show ‘Bear’ which aims to explore story telling techniques creating a setting with words, playing with light and dark.
As a writer Joseph has been published in the English Media Magazine, and the most current, Caribbean issue of Sable Lit mag. His poem ‘If all the world were paper’ was also published this year by Macmillian in the renowned anthology ‘The Works 6′.
Joseph works tremendously hard on a day to day basis providing writing workshops for a variety of institutions, he is currently working with three schools for the Mousetrap foundation helping students create their own plays, as well as an ongoing performance poetry course of his own design at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. He has led workshops for Oily Cart theatre company, RIFCO, Slough Inclusive Youth Theatre Project, and with the BBC and British Library as part of their ‘Silk Roads Project’. He has a background in theatre and has worked as Assistant Director with Battersea Arts Centre, Talawa Theatre Company, The UCL Bloomsbury, with Library Theatre (Manchester) on Jonzi D’s ‘Aeroplane Man’. He has performed as part of Apples & Snakes Broken Words tour and at the International Writers Festival at the Royal Festival Hall.
