Spiro – Biography
Spiro are four instrumentalists whose unique contemporary sound takes minimalist trance, dance rhythms, the strong melody of a pop hook, classical harmonies and discords and the raw energy of punk and packages these elements into strong accessible arrangements, around bold original and traditional tunes. A Northern English border pipe tune collides with a thick wall of interlocking rhythms; a celestial multi-layered cascade of sparring musical lines snaps into tight acoustic electronica. The immensity of Spiro’s sound belies the simplicity of the line-up – violin, accordion, mandolin and acoustic guitar.
Spiro have performed at venues and festivals across Europe. Festival appearances in the UK have included The Barbican’s ‘English Originals’ and ‘Evolving Tradition’ festivals, Sidmouth International Festival of the Performing Arts and Glastonbury Festival. The band have residencies at the Royal Albert Hall ‘Ignite’ concerts and the Royal Festival Hall foyer concerts, and have performed at regional theatres and arts centres including Bristol’s Colston Hall. Spiro have also collaborated and toured with the theatre company Theatre Alibi providing live and recorded soundtracks.
