Tape – Biography
Swedish trio Tape was set up in 2000 by brothers Andreas and Johan Berthling with Tomas Hallonsten. Taking cues both from pop, experimentalism, and minimalism their sound has become something easily recognizable. Their first album Opera was released on the Häpna imprint (which Johan is co-owner of) in 2002. Working intuitive, with many instruments at hand they built minisymphonies out of electronic noise paired with melodic lyricism.
2003 saw the release of Milieu, also recorded at a small stone barn on the island of Öland, east-coast of Sweden. Here the music became more arranged and a pop sensibility became clearly visible. In 2005 they went to Cologne to have Marcus Schmickler produce and record their third album Rideau. This was done in his Piethopraxis studio in Cologne and his involvement left traces. An almost architectonal approach was taken and gone where the naturalism that characterized the first two albums.
Their fourth album Luminarium, 2008 was recorded at the group´ s own studio Summa in Stockholm.
In 2006 they collaborated both live and on record with Japanese duo Tenniscoats on their album Tan – Tan Therapy (Häpna 2007), the same year they also collaborated on record with japanese quartet Minamo. A record titled Birds of a feather (HEADZ 2007).
Touring has taken them to places like the US, Japan, Taiwan and most parts of Europe.
