The Blessing Q & A

June 26th, 2008 by

The Blessing Q & AHalfway through a national tour, The Blessing have been causing a sensation around the UK recently, with half of their number having just finished a tour with Portishead, and their debut album All Is Yes, being nominated for Best Album in this year’s BBC Jazz Awards. We managed to grab ten minutes in their busy schedule for a quick Q & A session ahead of their performance at The Big Chill 2008…

How would you describe your performance?

Energetic creation and destruction of melody and rhythm.

How many people will be involved?

Four or twenty.

How much time have you spent preparing?

45 years.

What should we look or listen out for?

Correct notes and hitting.

What’s your latest release called and how do you feel about it?

It’s called "All Is Yes" on Cake records and we love it like a little child.

What will you be wearing?

Very good suits and paper bags.

What should your audience wear?

Nothing.

Describe yourself in one sentence.

Angry young men pretending to be polite old men.

Where are you from?

Down the docks.

What was the last thing to make you laugh?

Cormac McCarthy.

What was the last song or album you listened to?

Krulle Bol by This Is The Kit.

If you were an object, what would you be?

A very expensive espresso machine.

The late James Brown used to ask for an ‘oxygen mask’, J-Lo needs ‘every room to be freshly painted in pure white’ and Chuck Berry had ‘Drummer, bass player, piano player. All must know my songs.’ on his. What would you have on your dream rider?

4 pairs of bullet proof underpants and 600 pot noodles (beef and tomato) with the room decorated in pot noodle wallpaper.

You’re being fired into space, never to return to earth. Before take-off, you’re given a media player that can store one song, one film and one book. What do you download onto it?

Funamentalfrienddependability (Snoopy), Holy Mountain (Alejandro Jodorowsky) and Murphy (Samuel Beckett).

What makes a great festival?

Mud.

Got any camping tips?

Don’t.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you at a festival?

We got paid!

Camping, hotel, tour-bus or home to sleep?

All of them are the best.

Who are you looking forward to seeing perform this year?

Cornelius and The Mighty Boosh.

There’s a great Art Trail at The Big Chill. If you were to paint a picture, for the Art Trail, what would it be of and why?

A paper bag……because.

Have you been to the Big Chill before?

Nope.

What are you expecting it to be like?

F***ing ace!
