All Good Funk Alliance
October 23rd, 2008 by sparkyOn Saturday November 15th, the All Good Funk Alliance flew in from the USA for an exclusive UK show at The Big Chill House. They make and play the kind of music it’s impossible not to wiggle your butt to. After a slew of fine 12”s and remixes, the Jalapeno crew have decided to release a “best of” entitled The Raid. We sent the AGFA guys a few questions ahead of their visit…
Who are you?
Rusty B and Frank C, or Frank C and Rusty B depending on who you meet first.
What have you been working on lately?
Remixes for various artists such as Fort Knox 5 and Ursula 1000. A mix CD for Jalapeno, and various other side projects.
What are your current top tunes?
Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop “Point Blank” (AGFA Remix) MPM
Neighbour “Body Slam” Punch Out
Slynk “We came here to Party” Unreleased
Jungle Brother “Get Down” (Bronx Dogs Remix) Gee Street
Jon Ohms “Breath Stop” Good Groove
The BreakBeat Junkie vs. DJ P “Let the Record Play” Baffin Island
And your all-time top tunes?
Rusty B:
My Bloody Valentine “Soon”
Public Enemy “Don’t Believe The Hype”
The Happy Monday’s “God’s Cop”
De La Soul “Buddy”
New Order “Blue Monday”
Frank C:
Michael Jackson – Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough
Jan Hammer – Don’t You Know
Jamiroquai – Mr Moon
Led Zeppelin – Good Time Bad Times
Elis Regina – Aguas de Marco
Who or what inspired you to start DJing?
Rusty B:
DJ Zero, DJ Hipp-E, early Hip-Hop and Rave Culture
Frank C:
Going to my first raves and seeing Scott Henry and DJ Dan.
If you could DJ back to back with another DJ (living or dead) who would it be, and why?
Rusty B:
DJ Zero, because he was ill on the production tip and scratch tip and no one really knew of him. I would love to DJ while he scratches and cuts over the set and just rock back and forth with him all night.
What’s been your best DJing experience?
Rusty B:
At Shambhala. A festival during the summer in Canada. They have a stage called the Fractal Forest and words can’t really do the festival or the gig justice. It’s simply the greatest rave on earth.
Frank C:
I had a really great experience DJing in a tiny tent at Burning Man in 2006. There were only about 20 people in the tent dancing but everyone was really perceptive to what I was playing and the vibe was just perfect.
And your worst?
Rusty B:
Playing Sacre Bleu in Denver. The owner would come in and micro-manage my set. Telling me to pump it up, turn it down, play more vocals, play something harder, etc. It was a nightmare.
Frank C:
There are a few really bad gigs I can remember mostly involving bars where people just don’t give a shit about who we are what we are playing. People there tend to get surly with us and ask for something off the charts or music we just don’t carry. We usually tell them to go to their cars and turn on the radio.
Where’s the best place you’ve DJ’d?
Rusty B:
Canada, every city I have played in Canada goes off. The DJ’s there are awesome, and the crowds really know how to get down.
Frank C:
Boogieburg in Blacksburg Virginia. They always seem to throw the best party on the east coast. Overseas I played at a party in Freiburg, Germany that was just amazing. And in Australia I played some really killer parties there.
Describe your ideal evening chilling at home…
Rusty B:
Pouring a nice Pale Ale, eating some nuts and chilling with the wife and dog as we watch something good on the T.V.
Frank C:
Sitting in my garden on a nice day or night with a few friends, drinking beers and listening to music.
Where is your favourite place?
Rusty B:
Black Rock City (Burning Man), we go out with all our friends and hook up with our peeps from around the country and get silly for a week.
Frank C:
I have to agree with Rusty.
What are you reading these days?
Rusty B:
Y the last man standing
Frank C:
“The Pig That Wants to Be Eaten” and a bunch of music publishing books.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Rusty B:
Adam Sandler.
Frank C:
Based on my appearance, Jon Oliver from the Daily Show. For my personality, a few people say I remind them of Larry David. On both cases I’m sure if I should be flattered or not.
Highlight of your life so far?
Rusty B:
Falling in love with my wife.
Frank C:
Birth of my daughter Kiera.
What would you most like to achieve over the next five years?
Rusty B:
Taking All Good Funk Alliance further by maybe building a live show. Continuing with the labels and making them stronger, faster and better. Start working on my slow disco odyssey which has been in my head for 2 years.
At a festival – tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?
Rusty B:
A tent, I like camping and roughing it.
Frank C:
I must agree, camping is great.
I’m just on my way to the bar – what I get you?
Rusty B:
Something with Gin, or a nice cold beer.
Frank C:
Gin and tonic please.
When are you next performing?
This weekend in DC for a party called Hometown Heroes. It’s in a dirty warehouse and we are playing in the basement with some huge bass-bins.
Where can we find you online?

Is there anything else we should know?
Rusty B:
We destroy it when we DJ and produce. Seriously, our music will hit you straight up in the dome piece and the only way to handle it is to beam up to the mother-ship.
Frank C:
What he said.
