Pick ‘n’ Mix at The Big Chill House

October 1st, 2008 by

Erstwhile Portishead DJ, beat digger, album compiler, and one of the most eclectic and funky DJs out there, Andy Smith kicks off his exclusive weekly residency ‘Pick n’ Mix’ at the Big Chill House in October. With unannounced special guests alongside fellow residents Keith Lawrence & Mistah Brown, get ready for a weekly selection of funk, boogie, northern soul, old school hip hop, jump blues, reggae & anything else that that can scooped into the bag…

So, Pick n Mix? Tell us more…

I wanted to do a night that was a bit more fun! I like lots of different music styles, so thought “why not play them all together on the same night?” I want to play Northern soul alongside classic hip hop, with 50′s RnB nrxt to killer roots reggae, next to old pop classics, etc.

On the theme of Pick n Mix, what are your favourite old school sweets?

Fruit Salad (1 penny each in my day!).

You seem to never stop DJing – what’s your favourite place to play and why?

I really like playing in Australia. The Dynamo Productions project that I did with Scott Hendy (aka Boca 45) is very big out there which helps! Other than that, Ireland always tends to be good.

OK, we know this is a tough one, but what’s your all time top 5 records?

1)A Case of Too Much Love Making – Gloria Scott
2)Dwyck – Gang Starr
3)Somethings Wrong – Chris Clark
4)King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown – Augustus Pablo
5)Touch And Go – Wyonna Carr

And your current top 5?

1) I Don’t Wanna Stop – The Bamboos
2) Power Of The Great – Candice Cannibis
3) Don’t Go Back – The Breakbeat Junkie
4) Boops Apocalypse – Harvey K-Tel
5) Sugar Coated – Parker feat Sarah Scott

You’ve recently converted to Serato – any tips for potential newcomers out there?

I was anti-Serato for ages but now do some gigs with vinyl only (usually just 45s) and some gigs with Serato and I thinkboth are good in their own way. It can sometimes be a hassle to get Serato set up and you have to keep cleaning the needles. Also turn off your internet connection if the venue has wi-fi, as Serato has been known to shut down – as happened to me once!

Any more time in the studio planned?

Lots! I have so many projects that I am trying to get completed, it’s hard to keep on top of it all!

Right, we’re off to the bar – what you having?

Real ale works for me!

Finally – one last tune, what’s it gonna be?

One Love – Bob Marley.

Pick n’ Mix at The Big Chill House from 8pm – 1am, every Thursday, starting 2nd October.
