Fluidnation

November 17th, 2008 by

Fluidnation is on the move, heading across London, back to it’s spiritual home at the more intimate Big Chill Bar, from October 29th 2008. As a taster of what to expect, you can download a lovely new fluidnation mix here.

We catch up with Ben Mynott, the driving force behind fluidnation…

Who are you?
[url=/news/2005/04/ben-mynott]Ben Mynott, founder of fluidnation.

Where have you played/promoted before – what other projects of yours might Big Chillers be familiar with?
I was one half of Fragile State, a project that was born out of great ideas which saw me co-write and co-produced two critically acclaimed albums “The Facts and the Dreams” and “Voices of the Dustbowl”. I have also compiled countless compilations for various labels. I’m a huge lover of all things Big Chill – it has been huge part of my life.

What’s the music policy for fluidnation?
just.beautiful.music – it’s that simple. I want fluidnation to be as accessible as humanly possible. I want it to be something for everyone without sounding pretentious. The aim of the night is to play music and new music with the emphasis on beautiful arrangments. I firmly believe it’s deep within the tracks’ arrangement that brings out the beauty. Come, listen. Music where people can enjoy the evening without the policy changing as the night goes on. fluidnation is a sound, just.beautiful.music. So far, the feedback I’ve received has been nothing short of amazing, so thanks to all for your comments.

Tell us something about previous guests?
Mr Tom, Andy Digitonal and inputJunkie are never that far away. They’ve both contributed to the night going so well to date. We’ve had Jon Hopkins down who played a new track that he finished that day, and we’ve more surprises with future guests next year. John Rixon (Amukidi) provides visuals for the night on a regular basis; Myogenic has also been down a fair few times.

Anything in the pipeline for future dates at the house?
Next fluidnation after the Oct 29th one is Wednesday 19th November. 7-12pm, with me and Mr Tom, Andy Digitonal and inputJunkie.

If money was no object, and you could book any line-up of DJs and bands living or dead, who would play?
I’d love to be able to do something with Marvin Gaye. I’m a huge admirer of his work. “What’s Going On” is a massive album in my history. Again, the arrangements… I think Dean Martin would’ve been great to work with too. Who knows whether anything would have actually got done!!!! Presently, I’d love to book the likes of Jon Hopkins again (who I believe is without doubt the most talented man in music right now), Ulrich Schnauss, Thomas Newman, Craig Armstrong and Luomo. The most impressive album I’ve heard recently is Karma’s “Late Night Daydreaming” – an album that is just simply stunning from start to finish. So I’d love to book them too!

What are your current top 10 tunes?

01 :: Jon Hopkins :: Wire
02 :: Leo Abrahams :: Spider (Jon Hopkins Remix)
03 :: Laura B :: Spaced/Lovebleeps
04 :: Aluminium :: I’m Bound To Pack It Up/Never Far Away (Remixes) <<<< Jack White’s new project
05 :: Winona Rosebud :: untitled <<<< a new project from Craig Armstrong
06 :: Culprit :: Sway (Strings Mix)
07 :: Karma :: Requiem/All And Everything In Between
08 :: Jon Beltran :: It Was All Beautiful
09 :: Koop :: Koop Island
10 :: Marsmobil :: Minx

What’s your house like?
Spacious, warm, with a gorgeous old wood-burner and a lovely garden that backs on to fields full of deer. I love it there. My fiancée and I just like the quiet life really. Nice walks in the countryside and a nice cuppa tea. And plenty of tuneage.

I’m on my way to the bar, what would you like?
A Chilli Mojito if possible. And a stool. I’ll need to sit down after this. I’m what some might say, a lightweight! Oh, and keep the change.
