DJ First Rate at The Big Chill House

January 14th, 2009 by sparky

Is January a bit of a slow month for you? All partied out from the annual festivities, not to mention out of pocket too? Well, then we’ve got just what you need to help get you in the swing of it for 2009 - a world class DJ, playing at one of the best hip hop nights this side of the Atlantic, right here at The Big Chill House.

On January 31st, former Scratch Pervert, DJ First Rate will be performing at Scratch, which is reason enough alone for you drag yourself off the sofa, but it gets better - if you can to The House by 10pm, entrance is free (and £5 after).

We thought we’d ask First Rate what’s rocking his world right now…

Who are you?

I’m DJ First Rate, AKA Agent Paul Bruce.

What have you been working on lately?

My new EP - Agent Paul Bruce Project.

What are your current top 5 tunes?

Errrmmm…
1) ‘Ante Up’ - MOP
2) ‘Crazy In Love’ Beyonce
3) ‘Jump Around’ House of Pain
4) ‘Mille’ Lil Wayne
5) ‘Witness’ Roots Manuva

And your all-time top 5 tunes?

Errrrrrrrmmmmmmm…
1) ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ Ol Dirty Bastard
2) ‘Beat It’ Micheal Jackson
3) ‘Jump Around’ House of Pain
4) ‘Sex Machine’ James Brown
5) ‘Can I Kick It?’ A Tribe Called Quest

Who or what inspired you to start DJing?

I don’t know really. I was a breaker in the beginning and another breaker showed me scratching for the first time!

If you could DJ back to back with another DJ (living or dead) who would it be, and why?

I guess it would have to be doing scratchin’ for Jimi Hendrix in a jam session - sorry he’s not a DJ!!

What’s been your best DJing experience?
Errrrrmmmmm…doing a show at The Raleigh Studios in L.A. for ‘EL TV’.

And your worst?

Breaking a turntable in the middle of a show for 30,000 people with Morcheeba.

Where’s the best place you’ve DJ’d?

By the side of a pool at a private mansion in Marseille

Describe your ideal evening chilling at home…

Watching a bit of ‘Family Guy’ or The Simpsons and having a few cold ones.

Where is your favourite place?

The bedroom, he he he!!!

What are you reading these days?

I’m into films - not really a reader. I may look at the pic in certain glossy magazines (if you know what I mean, hah).

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

Mike Myers

Highlight of your life so far?

Getting married to my beautiful wife (owww, she’s hitting me!!).

What would most like to achieve over the next five years?

A newq album, a baby, a massive record deal and a US tour with a band, on a US tour-bus!

At a festival - tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?

Bored of hotels, so I would have to say sitting in the wings of a festival, getting open, watching the bands.

What was your best Big Chill moment?

Last time I played it went off when Tucka Yute (not sure if that’s the correct spelling) got on the mic and did a freestyle.

Describe the essence of The Big Chill in a few words…

Party people losing themselves inside a room of love.

I’m just on my way to the bar - what I get you?

Bud, or vodie and Red Bull.

When are you next performing?

February, somewhere in Europe.

Where can we find you online?

www.myspace.com/djfirstrate

Is there anything else we should know?

I rock parties!!

Check the myspace for the new EP soon come!!!
