Visit Herefordshire
January 6th, 2009 by sparky
With so much to do in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside why not extend your stay when you come to The Big Chill? Eastnor Castle or the nearby thriving towns of Ledbury and Malvern make ideal places to begin your exploration of the area - a county of unspoiled countryside, market towns of distinctive character and a wealth of varied landscapes, and fascinating villages. To the north, discover hop fields and vineyards, whilst to the west is the beautiful Golden Valley, bordered by the Black Mountains and Hay-on-Wye. Head south and the River Wye winds it’s way through Ross-on-Wye to the Forest of Dean, arguably the birthplace of English tourism.
Throughout Herefordshire, there’s a strong tradition of farm cider making, so why not follow the Cider Route around the cider-makers large and small? Weston’s Cider is only a few miles out of Ledbury, an ideal place for a family expedition, with cider tours, shire horses, dray rides, a children’s playground and a rare breeds farm park. In nearby Much Marcle is Hellens House, a fascinating Jacobean manor house, whilst Little Marcle is home to Newbridge Farm Park, which is open for it’s annual summer event from July 20th – August 29th. There’s plenty for children to do in the summer at The Small Breeds Farm Park & Owl Centre (Kington), or Shortwood Farm Park (Pencombe, nr. Bromyard), the Amazing Hedge Puzzle & The Butterfly Museum (Symonds Yat West) and the county’s museums and libraries run a programme of activities during the school holidays. Canoe down the River Wye, go riding on quiet bridle paths, walk the fields and explore the woodlands. Thinking about it, you’ll need at least a month.
