Chinese Man broke out on the scene in 2005 with the release of its first EP, “The Pandi Groove EP” (500 units). Symbolic of the multiple influences of the crew, this first vinyl opened the way for instrumental hip-hop crafted with slices of funk, pinches of dub and a splash of traditional music.
In 2006, “The Bunni Groove EP,” the group’s second EP, quickly sold 500 units in confidential release. Mercedes chose “I’ve Got That Tune” off the EP for their advertising campaign for the new “Class A.” The French film festival of Hong Kong also used the catchy tune as its opening trailer that same year.
After the 2007 release of “The Indi Groove EP” (professional support from Just Like Vibes and 1000 units sold), the label produced “The Groove Sessions Vol.1″ a first CD gathering previous EPs (10.000 units sold in one year).
This debut album, supported by Radio Grenouille and Radio Nova, grabs a wider audience with play on France Inter, Frequence Jazz and other alternative frequencies in France and Europe. Some tracks are selected in best-of compilations, such as “My playlist by Troublemakers,” produced by Wagram.
Chinese Man also offers a live show with two DJs and four turntables. In four years, Chinese Man has performed more than 100 times in cities ranging from Paris to San Francisco alongside the biggest names in today’s music (Sharon Jones, DJ Vadim, Asian Dub Foundation, Bonobo, DJ Qbert…)
The label was also invited to San Francisco to tour the Bay Area in 2007. Upcoming events include a new tour in San Francisco in 2009, the production of a hip hop album with local MCs and a documentary on the Hip Hop Battles universe in the Bay Area.
Since its creation, Chinese Man Records takes care of the music production and promotion of its artists (on vinyl or on stage), and the production of their own video clips too. In 2008, Fred & Annabelle, two of those directors are rewarded for their creative work with Chinese Man Records and are chosen to shoot Bjork’s “Innocence” video clip.
In 2008, Chinese Man Records produced 2 new EP (Small City Music by Sly - Le Pudding by Leo le bug). In 2009, Chinese Man will release its new vinyl Hong Kong Dragon Speaking, and the 1st of April 2009, the awaited “Groove Sessions Vol.2″ will be released.
In 2009, Sly, High Ku and ZĂ© Mateo will travel in France and all other the world with a new Live Show including 3D and video, The Groove Sessions Live!
