Open Dex 2009
February 18th, 2009 by sparky
Open Dex means exactly that - we’re flinging open the doors to the public to come and show us what they’ve got behind the decks. Battling it out through different heats, the winner will be awarded a set at this years festival, alongside some of the best DJs in the world!
Judged by our expert panel as well as by the public, as the heats will be taking place at The Big Chill House in King’s Cross. The competition in previous years has been tough, but don’t let that put you off, as its only open to non-professional DJs. That means if you’ve ever been paid for your DJ services you are not eligible, sorry! So, whether you’re a fresh faced starter, a bedroom battler or just fancy a change in vocation, lets hear it!
No experience is necessary and the Open Dex hosts will be on hand to show you how the equipment works on the night, but you will obviously have to bring your own records, CDs and/or laptop!
To enter, please email your DJ name, email address, mobile phone number and a description of the style of music you would like to play to opendex@bigchill.net - and please put ‘Open Dex’ as the subject line.
The winner of each fortnightly heat will be booked to play a two hour Sunday DJ set at The Big Chill Bar. They will also be entered into July’s Open Dex Final. The winner of the final gets to play a slot at one of the Big Chill festival’s legendary cocktail bars.
So what are you waiting for??
*If you cannot make it to Kings Cross on a Wednesday evening, or Brick Lane on a Sunday afternoon/evening, or if you cannot be near Ledbury in early August 2009, then please don’t enter!
**We’re not ones to promote musical snobbery, but please remeber that as the winning DJ will be performing at 12noon on a Sunday, if you play nose-bleed techno, hard house, gabba, trance or deep/tech/minimal/funky house then this competition is probably not for you.

How’s it going Big Chill?!
It’s great to get a chance to talk you, you may not remember me, but I have met you before, in ‘06 and ‘08 I believe. We got on very well!
A friend told me that choos guys are looking for DJs for this year’s festival?
If true, I would love to take the opportunity to introduce myself in full.
I am Raath-Mon-Tet, resurrected sub-pharoah of the M25, and I love playing allll kind of music. I have only just started on the gigging scene but have played dance music at some swanky London clubs such as Corsica Studios and Hidden along with more local nights, psychedelic boat parties and radio shows. I have never been paid for a gig because I’m just that nice, but if I had I might own a laptop and not have to borrow every time!
I have played, love and live for music of any colour or creed, but I would love to perform some psychill, IDM, african/latin, dub and dubstep for you lovely lovely people.
Love you! xxx

hey guys,
for the past 4 years i have been in love with the turn tables. i mix liquid drum & bass and dubstep as well as producing my own music. my music has warm deep bass vibes ideal for the ambience of the Chill. i have attended the festival for the last 3 consecutive years and still cant get enough of the uniqueness of the Big Chill. i am currently in the process of contacting various record labels with my material after being given much positive feedback from various venues i have performed at, including ”the Jailhouse” club in Hereford. reading my myspace page will give you more information about myself and a taste of my sounds.
Much love,
James Evans
