More about Bronson…
Selected for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance Film Festival, January 2009, Bronson was one of 16 films chosen for the competition out of over 1000 entries. Tom Hardy’s performance and the film received critical acclaim.
In 1974, a misguided 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post office. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to 7 years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement.
With an intelligent, provocative and stylised approach, BRONSON follows the metamorphosis of Mickey Peterson into Britain’s most dangerous prisoner, Charles Bronson. The title character is played with disturbing intensity by actor Tom Hardy who physically transformed himself for the role. Hardy said, “The opportunity to play such a complex and tormented real-life character was a unique challenge for me, and one that required a great level of commitment and understanding.”
Director Nicolas Winding Refn says about his new film, “It is Bronson’s unending thirst for celebrity that has kept in prison for so long. And it was this particular aspect of his personality that we tried to capture in the film.”
The screenplay is written by Brock Norman Brock (Dogging: A Love Story) and Nicolas Winding Refn. The director of photography is Larry Smith BSC (Eyes Wide Shut) and is produced by Rupert Preston (Faintheart, Dirty Sanchez The Movie) and Daniel Hansford. The movie is executive produced by Allan Niblo, James Richardson, Paul Martin and Nick Love (The Business, The Football Factory).
Big Chill regular and the film’s musical supervisor, Lol Hammond, had this to say about working on Bronson…
When the chance came up to work with acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, I leapt at it. I had previously worked with Nicolas on part two of his critically acclaimed ‘Pusher’ series – hugely successful, hard-hitting, powerful dramas in Scandinavia, they enjoy cult status here in the UK
.
Stanley Kubrick’s director of photography Larry Smith was also thrown into the mix. All in all, an irresistible
Cocktail. When Nicolas showed me the initial rushes I was quite simply blown away! Tom hardy in the lead role
is sensational. Nicolas’ take on the ‘Bronson’ story is totally original and captivating.
A big difference between this and previous movies I have worked on as music supervisor was that there was no composer as such attached. We tried several options but in the end we returned to vibe of the initial temps and used big classical tracks, mostly played by orchestras made up of a hundred players or so, performing pieces that were incredibly hard to match in their power and sheer intensity, by the likes of Wagner, Verdi and Richard Strauss.
Nicolas is a huge fan of the Pet Shop Boys and I showed an early cut to both Neil and Chris from the band. They were incredibly supportive of the project and we ended up using there classic ‘It’s a Sin’ in a key scene and as the films official trailer.
The soundtrack is very much an eclectic affair. As well as the Pet Shop Boys, it also features the incredible Walker Brothers track ‘The Electrician’, New Order’s ‘Your Silent Face’, a fantastic slice of electronica from New York based Glass Candy titled ‘Veris Colour’.
The incredibly talented Big Chill Label artist Eva Abraham supplies three bespoke tracks. I have worked with Eva on several movie projects now and I always find her a joy to work with. Very creative and collaborative.
‘Bronson’ was an official entry to the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, where it ended up being the third best received film by the critics. The release date for this amazing and original movie is March 13th and there will be a soundtrack released three days later on EMI .
