Kid’s Zone

April 14th, 2009 by

dsc_0568The party ain’t over once you got kids, in fact, it’s just beginning! At the UK’s most family-friendly festival, not only do children under 13 get in for a mere £4, but they are entertained as VIPs – along with their parents.

This year, the Kid’s Zone offers fun and performances from No Strings Puppet Theatre, Crazy Comic Club, Scamp Theatre’s production of Pinocchio, John Hegley and many more… Plus on going activities and workshops for kids in movement and dance, drum making, arts and crafts and giant 3D sculpture.

The Crazy Comic Club

diarybloglogo-1Crazy Comic Club workshops can be about almost anything. You can express your imagination through stories and strips, and focus on any subject, from the real world to the realms of fantasy. Students’ storytelling and illustration skills are developed, and result in their own awesome comic…

Scamps Theatre’s Pinnochio

pinocchiotnSteve Tiplady, as Geppetto, uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy, and the puppet-maker who wants to be a father.

Pinocchio is carved on stage, brushes become a fox and the shadow of two saws transforms into a giant shark. An element of improvisation makes each performance unique to it’s audience. Puppetry, shadows, illusion and especially compossed music combine to create a show with ssomething for all ages; it’s inventive, visually and verbally witty, with a big heart.

John Hegley

confetti_2John Hegley was born in 1953 in Newington Green, and moved to Luton at an early age. After leaving school he worked as a bus conductor and social security clerk, until he went to Bradford University, eking out his grant by working as a nurse in a local mental hospital.

He has worked with two children’s theatre groups, ‘Interaction’ and ‘Soapbox’, and began his highly successful career at the notoriously tough comedy store in 1980.

His first notable media exposure was the John Peel sessions (Radio One) with Popticians in 1983/4, with songs about spectacles and the misery of human existence.

After publishing ‘Glad to Wear Glasses’ in 1990 another six titles followed filled with verse, prose, drawings drama and photographs of potatoes, and the CD/Cassette ‘Saint and Blurry’.

In 2000, John received an honorary Arts Doctorate from Luton University and had his most notable live engagement in a women’s prison, Medellin, Columbia.

Mischief Makers

protest-camp-poster-mmMischief Makers is an arts education project by visual artists Nicola Godlieb and Sarah Conway-Dyer.

They aim to create idea-driven, conceptual arts projects for children and young people that utilise and respond to the environment and users of a given space. Mischief Makers aim is to empower and inspire young people through educative and original visual art projects with an aim to extend the boundaries of traditional children’s art practice. Each project will involve children from the conception stage through to realisation, with an emphasis on enjoying not just the process but the history and context of the chosen art form. Projects will take influence from such art forms as installation, intervention and site-specific work, which will necessarily bring young people’s artwork out of schools and community centres into the public realm. It is their belief that children have huge untapped creative potential and Mischief Makers intention is to engage them in a fun and inspiring range of innovative projects.
