Leave No Trace at Eastnor 2009 – Join the litter picking team!

April 14th, 2009 by

We aim to make The Big Chill as sustainable as possible by minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill. We also make sure that we Leave No Trace, ensuring the entire site is tidy and free from litter before we leave and we need your help to achieve this.

The work is varied but everyone in the crew is involved in the recycling process, some of the things you might be asked to do include:

  • Picking up litter, separating the recyclables as you go.
  • Emptying bins.
  • Sorting the recyclables.
  • Giving out bags at the main gates.

Be warned – the work can be messy. While you will be provided with protective gloves and a high-viz vest, you will need to wear old work clothes and sturdy waterproof footwear – i.e. no flip flops!

While you’re part of the Recycling and Litter Crew you can camp in the relative luxury of our crew area, with showers, a marquee with sofas and music. After each shift you’ll be given a meal ticket to use in our café. You get one meal per shift worked.

In return for a Full Weekend Adult Pass to The Big Chill you will need to complete 20 hours work, over 4 shifts (each shift is 5 hours long).

You can choose between three shift options on the application form, We’ll do our best to give you the shifts you’ve asked for but unfortunately we can’t please everyone so you’ll have to be prepared to work when we ask you to.

When 20 hours of work are completed you will receive a payment into your bank account equal to the deposit cheque you gave us. We normally return this within 2 weeks of the end of the event.

Please note that applicants must be 18 years of age or over and physically fit. The work can certainly be fun but it will involve getting up early some mornings, staying up late and working outdoors come rain or shine, so please be prepared for this!

You will not have your money returned if you turn up late, finish early, drop out or arrive unfit for work. You have to work the full 20 hours to get any money back. Not that we’re expecting any of these problems.

If you do have to drop out for any reason before the festival then please let us know in writing and we will return your cheque to you.

Note that no pets are allowed on the festival site. Friends and family that are not part of the Crew will not be allowed to camp with you in crew camping. If you are bringing children you will be required to buy children tickets and you must camp in the family camping. Please make sure that you have someone who can look after your child while you are working.

Note: We will cash deposit cheques in batches as they arrive, if you need us to cash it later or after a specific date let us know. (Obviously it needs to be cleared before the event!)

Passport Size Photo

Each application must include a passport sized photo so we can identify you at the gate and ensure you receive a pass to The Big Chill. Please write your name and postcode on the back of the photo. If you can’t sent in a photo we can accept an image emailed to us but please remember to include your postcode in the email.

Your application is only complete once we have received your;

  • Photo

Once your application is completed we’ll email you to let you know if you’re in. Nearer the time we’ll email you with directions and instructions to get to the correct gate.

Arriving at the Festival.

If you are working Option 1 you need to arrive on-site to attend the safety briefing at 20:00 on Wednesday 5th August.

If you are working Options 2 or 3 you need to arrive on-site to attend the safety briefing at 20:00 on Thursday 6th August.

Paid work after the Festival.

After the festival we run a final clean up operation for 6 days leaving the site exactly as we found it. We work 7.5 hours per day and pay £5.73 / hour. If you’re working full time then you get 3 meals a day. If you want to do this then please indicate on the Application form.

We look forward to hearing from you!
