Oren Marshall – Biography
Oren Marshall is a pioneering player of acoustic tuba and electric tuba who, crossing between classical, jazz, improvised and world music, has collaborated with the likes of Derek Bailey, Yannis Xenakis, Moondog,The Pan-African Orchestra and the London Philharmonic.
Oren took up the tuba at the age of fourteen after having studied oboe and recorder. By the time he was twenty he had played with every major orchestra in London as well as with the Bolshoi Soloists, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Ballet.
As a solo artist, Oren continues to explore strategies for extending the tonal range of the tuba and opening up a new vocabulary for his instrument. His ground-breaking solo work lead to a nomination for the BBC Innovation in Jazz Award for his composition ‘Introduction to the Story of Spedy Sponda; pt1: In a Silent Room’.
Spedy Sponda has provided a matrix for Oren’s continuing development of possibilities for solo acoustic/electric tuba.
He leads and writes for the Charming Transport Band, bringing together top musicians from Ghana and Nigeria and players from London’s jazz and improv scenes.
He also teaches on the Jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music and is a Tuba professor at Trinity College of Music.
