SolarAid at The Big Chill 2009

April 14th, 2009 by

solaraid-rgbSolarAid is an innovative charity, founded in 2006, helping poor communities to use solar power to fight climate change and poverty, as well as to have access to clean, renewable power.

Solar power leads to better education, health, safety and income by allowing poor communities to cook, pump water, run fridges, store medicines such as vaccines, light homes, schools, clinics and businesses, power computers and homes and farm more effectively.

SolarAid runs projects in Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya and rural South America. Their work is based on a micro-business approach: they believe that entrepreneurship is key to a successful development process that does not create dependency.

Using a pioneering and innovative technique called micro-solar, SolarAid teaches people to build solar-powered ‘Sunnymoney’ products, to charge mobile phones, lanterns and radios. We also provide business and marketing training so that these people can set up their own solar businesses, generate an independent income and build themselves and their families out of poverty.

SolarAid will be at The Big Chill spreading the word about the benefits of solar energy in the fight against world poverty and climate change. They will be giving talks and demonstrations, selling solar-powered lanterns (ideal for camping!) and offering solar-powered phone charging both around the site and at their info tent – The Sun Hut. So go and visit them at the Enchanted Garden.

SolarAid is also hooking up with The Big Chill to create The Busking Stage at this year’s festival.
