Biography:
Mowgli, AKA Manuel J Barrio is an artist with an extremely wide and far reaching creative career. He has touched disciplines as varied as lighting design, crafts, animation, sculpture, graphic design, painting, illustration, furniture design and djing.
Raised in Madrid but a London resident since 1999 he runs MJB Studio, a one man company offering creative services to top design and advertising agencies working for clients including Apple and the BBC.
Over the years he has embarked in numerous creative projects including various audio-visual club nights and residencies, collaborations with bands and vjed alongside electronic acts and djs like Greg wilson, Astrix and Infected Mushroom. His Vjing encompasses varied styles of self made content ranging from CGI to hand drawn animation and filmed sequences. His work which often includes intriguing captions, seamlessly integrates with the soundtrack creating a mesmerising audio-visual tapestry.
What inspired you to perform as a visual artist?
VJing has been the roof under which to house most of the disciplines that I have explored in the past and merge them into one as it combines the live performance edge of djing with the reclusive aspect of creating content, it being filming, drawing, animating or programming. In certain instances it can also include spatial aspects such as stage design, 3D screens and lighting, as vjing is at its best when a certain degree of consideration has been put into the presentation of the visuals and their impact on a specific environment.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Being selected as a finalist for the Edirol VJ challenge 2008 and working with the BBC.
What have you been up to recently?
I’m currently involved in a number of projects but I’m very excited about a collaborative piece of work using holographic projection technology.
Have you been to the Big Chill before?
No
What are you looking forward to the most at the Big Chill?
The festival vibe. I’ve only heard good things about the Big Chill and I can’t wait to experience it first hand. Obviously my visuals set is high up there too!
