Xela – Biography
Xela is the pseudonym of Black Country lad John Twells who for the last handful of years has exhumed countless spirits from his shadowy Midlands studio. Recording for labels as diverse as K7, City Center Offices, Neo Ouija, Digitalis, Dekorder and his own Type Records imprint, he has taken his sound on a journey through electronica, folk, hip hop and noise, arriving in a place inhabited by cinematic, breathless soundscapes and stifling ritualistic atmospheres. Tape loops, haunting vocals and cracked analogue synths punctuate his spacious sound and drag listeners into a calm unease before hitting them with a barrage of found sounds and spiraling washes of white noise. It might be ambient music, but there’s something rather peculiar lurking beneath the surface…
