The Big Chill Bristol… meet our new Bristol partner

September 7th, 2009 by

Dave Smeaton, took a few minutes off from overseeing the work in our new home to answer a few questions about what The Big Chill Bristol will be bringing to the city…

What was it about the Big Chill that made you want to bring it Bristol?

I’ve always thought the whole ethos of The Big Chill Festival was great and it’s always been a really popular festival for Bristol people. I then started DJing at the Big Chill Bar in London and thought that it would be fantastic to have a Big Chill venue in Bristol, luckily for us The Big Chill were really keen to open in Bristol also so maybe it was fate!

What sort of music and local DJs can we expect a The Big Chill Bristol?

The music is really important to us as it is a reflection of the festival in Bristol. We hope to create a music policy which is very much in keeping with The Big Chill but with a Bristol edge.

BC Bristol will be the only venue in west country to house festival fun all year round, what do you think about the new vibe it will bring?

Festival vibes are very much part of Bristol culture so to have a festival bar all year round will be great. I think it will definitely be a welcome addition to the Bristol scene.
What part of the project are you most excited about and what is the décor going to be like?

The decor will be fun, the plan is to make the bar an escape from the daily grind, very much like The Big Chill itself.

What kind of art can we expect to see on the indoor Art Trail?

This is something Katrina has been actively involved making happen. The artwork will be constantly changing to incorporate many different styles and we will without a doubt include many Bristol artists, especially as the Bristol art scene is so healthy. It’s got to have one of the best art scenes of any city in the world.

Tell us more about the food and drink at the venue… any items that we have to try?

The food will be made for sharing making it a great place for a party, we will be serving tapas style dishes influenced by markets from around the world and we will be using the best local suppliers to create these dishes. The aim is to create variety, very much like when you’re at the festival and spoilt for choice with all the fantastic food available. We’ll also have changing specials and invite the stalls from the festival to create their signature dishes to go on the menu. Of course, this will all need something to wash it down with, but rest assured that the drinks list will be second to none!

Tell us your favourite festival song.

I have loads but Orbital doing Chime this year at The Big Chill was pretty amazing!
