Red Rack’em on Big Chill Radio
October 5th, 2009 by sparky
Playing one of the highlight sets of the festival on the Frisky Bison Cocktail Bar stage, was Red Rack’em - currently one of the UK’s most sought after DJs and producers, who’s been earning praise from peers and fans alike over the past few years.
After he played to devastating effect, we rushed him straight over to Big Chill Radio to do it all over again and he didn’t disappoint! Delivering, in his own words “one the best sets I have ever played”, we’re delighted to give you another chance to listen to Danny’s radio show once again.
You can download the show here, or stream (via our media player) here. Enjoy!
Red Rack’em - Biography
Danny Berman aka Red Rack’em began releasing his naughty pirate soul remixes and disco edits between 2004-2006 and they were heavily supported by the likes of the Unabombers, Todd Terje, Swag, Yam Who, Prins Thomas as well as institutions such as Fat City and Piccadilly Records. He took a well earned break in 2007 and focused on getting his original productions up to scratch.
Danny returned to the Hot Coins disco project in 2008 with the Laissez Faire EP on Society Records which was awarded record of the week by Piccadilly and was well supported by Prins Thomas, Chris Duckenfield, Soul Mekanik and Bill Brewster. The lead track Norway Man was licensed to Fred Deakins ‘Nu Balearica’ comp on Ministry Of Sound. This led to him signing an album deal with the mighty Tirk Recordings who recently released the Valiant Truth EP, which has also been well received.
Gilles Peterson has been his biggest supporter though, hammering not just Hot Coins tracks on Radio 1 (including his massively hyped remix of Joubert Singers ‘Stand On The Word’) but also previewing the exciting Marlinspike Detroit 2 step project on his Worldwide radio show. Gilles has described Rack’em as ‘not being able to put a foot wrong right now’ and recently invited Danny to play at the 2009 Worldwide Awards where he had the honour of playing straight after Jazzanovas first ever UK live set. Dannys well received DJ set was then broadcasted on Radio 1 a week after the awards. Gilles also recently commissioned a Red Rack’em guest-mix for the Worldwide International show which you can check here.
Danny’s DJ performances are held in high regard and he has the rare talent of being able to play quality sets in several different fields or throw the whole lot together and join the dots between broken beat, electro, futuristic hip hop, proper Detroit house, 2 step and rough disco. This diversity has seen him perform alongside many heavy hitters… cosmic disco vibes with Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas….raw dubstep with Benga, Hatcha and N Type….futuristic hip hop with Flying Lotus….Detroit house with Demarkus Lewis… deep techno with Modeselektor and Move D…..
Recent gigs have included Snowbombing, Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Bestival, Matter and Gilles Petersons Worldwide Awards.
His broad taste in music has also led to him being in demand as a warm up DJ for several bands including Fat Freddys Drop, Dwele and Amp Fiddler.
Danny is also a respected radio broadcaster and his fortnightly Smugglers Inn podcasts (available at www.redrackem.com) are eagerly downloaded by over 600 leftfield beat heads from across the globe.
