The Scratch birthday party - featuring J.Rocc
October 20th, 2009 by sparky
They’ve been jam rockin’ since ‘96 and on November 28th Scratch celebrated in true musical style with their 13 1/3 year birthday party at the place where it all began, The Big Chill House (although back then in 1996, it was The Cross Bar).
To celebrate this momentous occasion they had a very special guest flying in all the way from LA, one of the world’s greatest DJs, the Beat Junkies very own J. Rocc (Stones Throw).
To help get you in the mood for the birthday shenanigans, the lovely people over at Stones Throw Records sent us this J. Rocc ‘Concrete Beats Vol. 1′ mix to share with you…

About J. Rocc
One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting.
He began DJing in the mid 80s, with California group PSK. Soon after forming the Beat Junkies (which included core member Babu, plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles) the crew became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop.
In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own productions for Stones Throw releases (including classics such as his funky ‘Gotta Have Freedom’ remix), J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (with Madlib and J Dilla) during the group’s live events and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.
J. Rocc is currently working on a solo album for Stones Throw.
Joining J. Rocc will be resident host’s Billy Biznizz and Tukka, who always add fire to the night with there electric mic skills.
Not forgetting our 13 1/3 residents who have been DJ’ing this event since it’s inception back in 1996, Matt Smooth, Lyley, Richy Pitch and Tomski.
Expect to see plenty of heads coming to celebrate with Scratch, B-Boys in action and possibly some free give aways including a special Scratch Addict tee especially made for the Birthday.
Come celebrate 13 1/3 years of Scratch with us, at what is sure to be another legendary night.

Fantastic DJ… Fantastic Mix (but it stops at Herbie Hancock)…
I saw J.Rocc with Madlib at Benji B’s Deviation and he was fantastic. Can’t wait to see him again.
Check out his mixes of J Dilla on the Stones Throw podcasts… they are unreal.
