Beyond the Loop - British mould-breakers blurring the edges of contemporary classical and electronic music.
Following its sell-out success in the King’s Place 2008 opening festival, Beyond the Loop, curated by Big Chill Label artist John Metcalfe, returns with 8 concerts showcasing the very best of British creativity and performance at the sharp edge of contemporary classical and electronic scenes. With the programming artist-led and specifically designed to demonstrate a healthy blurring of genre and style these events bristle with artists at the height of their creative energies and experience. From the world renown Duke Quartet to the electronic artistry of Warp Records’ Plaid and from Factory’s cult group Durutti Column to electro-whizz Jon Hopkins this festival is an absolute must for fans and adventurous newcomers alike. Culminating in the astounding collaboration involving live composition between electro pioneers The Bays, composers Simon Hale and John Metcalfe and the innovative Heritage Orchestra, this is not to be missed.

Red Snapper - 9pm
After a 6-year absence following a residence as one of Warp Records’ most successful acts, Red Snapper’s smokey organic mixture of dub, jazz and all tempos of breakbeat from trip hop to drum’n'bass returned with their release in late 08 of ‘A Pale Blue Dot’. They have been playing sell-out shows since.
Thursday 8th October
The John Metcalfe Band - 7.30pm
No other British band are currently blending contemporary and electronic styles in quite the same way as this collection of diverse and extraordinary musicians. Performing Metcalfe’s intense style-busting music are the likes of legend drummer Andy Gangadeen and The Bays’ sonic genius, Simon Richmond.
Jon Hopkins (with visuals by Myogenic) - 9pm
Known for two beautifully crafted albums and his work on Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’, Hopkins’ 2009 release of his third album,’Insides’, demonstrates a huge range of powerful emotion and texture, all informed by great musical intelligence and electronic wizardry.
Friday 9th October
The Duke Quartet - 7.30pm
One of Factory Record’s original classical singings, the Duke’s fierce commitment to new music and fearless approach has led to collaborations in dance, film, theatre and music of all styles, working with the likes of Blur, Jessye Norman and Rosas. This is a rare UK appearance from a unique British quartet which has garnered high praise from around the globe with its passionate performances both live and recorded.
The Durutti Column - 9pm
One of Factory Record’s originals, the maverick, uncategorizable and inimitable music of Manchester’s Vini Reilly and Bruce Mitchell has been enchanting a fiercely loyal crowd for nearly thirty years. An extremely rare chance to hear sublime music in a sublime acoustic.
Saturday 10th October
Plaid - 7.30pm
One of Warp Records’ finest Plaid have been bewitching audiences and influencing the evolution of the British electronic scene for two decades. Despite an enviable reputation for cutting edge collaboration tonight sees them in pure duo form.
The Bays/Simon Hale/John Metcalfe/The Heritage Orchestra - 9pm
This collaboration is unique and the concept simple but terrifying. Walk on stage and start composing (using Sibelius notation software) from scratch. No safety net. No pre-composed ideas or templates just a blank score. The orchestral musicians play from monitors linked to the composers’ computers. Jules Buckley, the Heritage Orchestra’s conductor, working from the ever-developing on-screen scores, brings in the musicians as he sees fit. The Bays respond. The composers respond to the Bays and orchestra. And so on. Suddenly you realise you are in the middle of a never to be repeated aural experience which could move in any direction at any time. Scarey but unbelievably exhilarating for both audience and musicians.
