One Good Thing
‘One Good Thing’ brilliantly and beautifully reflects the very natural talent of one of Britain’s most accomplished and unconventional singer songwriters. Recorded in just two weeks in live takes with minimal editing and overdubs, the result is a record of disarming honesty.
“Most of the music I’m inspired by was either recorded years ago or uses similar old-school analogue techniques. I guess if I had a reference point for the recording of this record it’d be stuff like Nick Drake’s ‘Five Leaves Left’ or Nico’s ‘Chelsea Girl’. Basically guitar and voice recorded together as it’s played with the sound of a room rather than a deadened vocal booth. Then the addition of beautiful, simple strings and the odd frame drum…” (Lou Rhodes)
This record charts the last two years of her life, from the very painful loss of her sister in ‘Janey’, through the heartbreak of ‘The Ocean’ to the rebirth of ‘One Good Thing’.
“With ‘There For The Taking’ I wanted to express the way that, if we just stop and fall back into the arms of the universe for a moment, she usually comes through.” (Lou Rhodes)
Motion Audio
Ninja Tune are proud and pleased to announce a new joint venture ‘Motion Audio.’
Ten years on from the release of The Cinematic Orchestra’s classic first album, ‘Motion,’ Jason Swinscoe has joined forces with the long term a&r for TCO, Dominic Smith, to launch a new record label, with resources and back-end supplied by Ninja.
The first release from the label comes in March 2010. Lou Rhodes, formerly of Lamb and a Mercury Music Prize nominee in her own right, will release her third solo album with the label titled “One Good Thing.”. This record will be followed by the debut full length from Gray Reverend, the Brooklyn singer-songwriter best known for his cover of ‘To Build A Home,’ which he performs live with TCO. His album will be produced by Swinscoe. Also expected in 2010 is an album from Phil France, the TCO bass player and co-writer.
“Motion Audio will be more about a vibe than any particular sound or style, Swinscoe says. We want to surprise people, move people, make art. The only thing the records will share is heart.”
