We thought we’d take advantage of having pinned down Gabriel and ask him a few questions about Hot Wuk’s past, present and future…
Who are you?
Gabriel Heatwave
What’s your night called?
Hot Wuk
What’s the music policy for your night?
We call it the weekly bashment carnival and it’s all music that we love: dancehall/bashment with a touch of soca and UK funky.
Who has played, or is going to play?
The residents are The Heatwave and Sticky. Guests lined up for 2010 include Chris Goldfinger, David Rodigan, Heartless Crew, Silverstar, Young Lion, Serocee and MistaJam.
If money was no object, and you could book any line-up of DJ’s and bands living or dead, who would play?
Stone Love, Super Cat, Beenie Man and Busy Signal would be pretty sweet
Who or what inspired you to start DJing?
I’ve been making mixtapes for my friends for as long as I can remember; I’ve always been passionate about music and about sharing tunes I love with other people. I know I got my first turntables for my 18th birthday but I can’t quite remember what made me want to get them and start DJing properly.
If you could DJ back to back with another DJ (living or dead) who would it be, and why?
I’m looking forward to going back to back with Sticky at Hot Wuk in January!
Where’s the best place you’ve DJed?
I’m still partial to small, low ceilinged hot and sweaty places like This Way Up in Bethnal Green.
What’s been your best DJing experience?
Playing a three hour set at Bestival in 2006 starting with a totally empty tent and filling it up within half an hour and leaving it totally destroyed at the end was pretty fun.
And your worst?
Anywhere with the decks on a really low table so that you do your back in bending over to mix
What are your current top 5 tunes?
1. Keida - Hot It Up
2. Mad Dog - Tek De Floor
3. Natalie Storm & Sticky - Look Pon Me
4. Busy Signal - Nuh Fraid of Them
5. Elephant Man - Rubba Bounce
What three things would your ideal bar have to have?
A very good soundsystem, a dedicated dancefloor and a bashment crowd.
I’m just on my way to the bar - what I get you?
Ha ha at Hot Wuk I’m normally on the shandy cos I’m driving! Otherwise I’ll probably have a rum.
Ideal evening chilling at home?
The details of that are fully guarded
Favorite place in the world?
Next to the bass bins when music I love is playing
What are you reading these days?
Twitter has become my source of news. Other than that I’m reading a book about The Thames and occasionally dipping into this weird book about Hackney though I can’t really handle the way it’s written.
What are you working on at present?
Some funky-house style bashment riddims that we’re gonna unleash on the world in 2010.
What would you most like to achieve over the next five years?
World domination.
Highlight of your life so far?
The best is yet to come.
At a festival - tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?
Got to be a tent.
What was your best Big Chill moment?
I’ve only been once (2009) and I was only there for about five hours: arrived, did an interview, played for three hours, got some food, drove home. The DJing part was definitely best. Looking up to see hundreds of people going mad to my Busy Signal/Sami Sanchez remix was definitely a highlight.
Anything else we should know?
Hot Wuk is held every Thursday at Big Chill House and it’s FREE to get in
