We grabbed 5 minutes with Black Devil Disco Club to find out
For those that don’t know – give us a brief introduction to who you are and what you do:
I’m a 64-year-old French musician who has been discovered by Chemical Brothers in 1999 when they use Earth Message, a track I’ve made in 1975, for their track called Got Glint on Surrender. In 2004 Aphex Twin re-issued on Replex the album Black Devil Disco Club I’ve made recorded in France in 1978. My music could be defined as timeless electro disco that can make you shiver or smile. It’s both fanciful and strange, just like our dreams. Of course it’s dance music but with an hint of voodoo.
The best thing about what you do is…
I don’t know if it’s an asset but as I’m not a DJ (I’m a bit too old to learn how to be a good one now) only a musician, I recreate the whole BDDC musical universe on stage with a vintage keyboard, my own voice and a laptop. It’s a work-in-progress and you can watch it while you’re dancing and drinking. You can even applause!
What are your current top 5 tracks?
When you’re my age there no more top 5 – only souvenirs amongst others : Art Tatum, The Supremes, Pink Floyd, Gloria Gaynor, Thelonious Monk… I also like some stuff that are made today but I’m no fan, I’m more like a music sociologist or a technician. So lately I’ve been listening to the works of Poni Hoax, Jon Spencer, Emperor Machine and Pilooski for instance.
What are you working on at present?
I’m finishing a new album while playing some gigs in Europe and planning on a small tour in the US and Canada in early august.
Finally, you’re playing at Big Chill Presents on Friday 21st May, what can our crowd expect from you?
I want people to dance, to have fun and sexe. I want them to show some love. And of course I hope the sound system will be as good as in my own studio so that you can enjoy a good BDDC show.
