Friday: Tinariwen on the Deer Park Stage

August 7th, 2010 by

tinariwenbc2010_croppedTinariwen are classed as world music in its purest, most original form. Tribal afrobeats, chants and compulsory dancing included.

Much to the festival’s excitement came an explosive and energising set from the collective, who formed back in 1979 and are clearly still full of beans and vigour in their performance abilities.

The group sing many of their songs in French which came as a nice surprise to the more recent of Tinariwen converts, and cited by Thom Yorke and Robert Plant as one of their greatest influences, the group are without a shadow of a doubt worth a listen for their almost healing effect on the withered, partied-out festival-goer.

Unsurprisingly, the set drew an impressive audience for a mid-afternoon slot, and remarkably, Tinariwen coaxed the sun out from behind the clouds.
