Saturday: Films at The Big Chill

August 8th, 2010 by

terminator_bfi-00m-eh5-copy-2If the purpose of the weekend is ultimate relaxation, and the name might suggest so, revellers could do much worse than put their feet up and enjoy a good movie.

With at least three places to view films of all kind, the best place to start this Saturday was at The Lost Picture Show. To help soothe tired heads ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ with its timelapse photography, epic shots of landscapes and Philip Glass soundtrack was the perfect remedy for a late night of debauchery. The blissed out audience sat, slept and dreamt throughout the images and music. On Sunday The Lost Picture Show’s ‘wake up’ film is Kubrick’s ’2001: A Space Odyssey.’

Elsewhere on site is The Dereliction Drive-In which last night hosted the original ‘Terminator’. Tonight, if audiences can face it is ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’, a Shane Meadows film that will guarantee to bring anyone down. Only those of sound body, state and mind need attend.

The main Cinema Tent had a much lighter affair with ‘Eagle Vs Shark’, a subtle New Zealand comedy starring Flight Of The Conchords’ Jermaine Clement. The merriment continued with ‘Dave Chappelle’s Block Party’ a truly exceptional documentary about the comedians efforts to put on a Block Party in Brooklyn. With performances from Mos Def, Eryka Badu and The Roots as well as comedy from the man himself, it’s as funny as it is uplifting.

What happened with Four Lions? I was more than a little annoyed to have waited around for well over an hour only to be told 40 mins after the film was due to start that they wouldnt be showing it due to ‘technical and contractual’ reason. A poor show, put more of a downer on a weekend with quite a few already.

Sadly, Chris Morris withdrew permission for us to screen Four Lions (after the programme went to print).

Apologies to all who were disappointed – we were really looking forward to showing you this film.
